Bobby Deol is one of the actors who we know suffers from not getting movies that suit him. He has tried action, thrillers, comedy, suspense, drama and every genre you can think of but we all have loved him in action thrillers.
Class of '83 is an exception. Not for the first time but after a long time he gets to show that he is capable of delivering a good dramatic role and can wear the skin of a character, make it believable and shine as an actor. But all is not well.
Class of '83 suffers from not sticking to its guns. Its a story of black sheep's of police academy that their Dean picks to inject into the system hoping their weakness and rebellious nature will work as their strength in field that is plagued by the infamous Bombay underworld.
Problem is that it tries to be a character driven movie and underworld gangster movie at the same time. Apart from Bobby Deol's character all of the others are very forgettable. Infact I watched it 5 minutes ago and don't remember anything about them nor I remember their names.
Editing tries to keep it crisp and clean but the action is so lackluster. It's just point and shoot gun battles.
Art and set design is so good but the cinematography is so bland. Bombay, Nashik, post office, bustling markets they all look the same. It's like the DoP isn't even trying to go past his efforts of shooting characters.
Background score tries to bring in the organic 80s music but is inconsistent with it,so that doesn't work either.
I think this movie could've been better if they didn't try to make a 1:30 hr movie. I could've spent some extra time with characters and the actors who by the way have done fantastic job.
It's a one time watch for Bobby Deol. But very forgettable. 6/10 + 2 stars for Bobby. I hope he gets more projects.
