Tomatometers 8,2 / 10 Writers Steven Spielberg story Mikey Walsh and Brandon Walsh are brothers whose family is preparing to move because developers want to build a golf course in the place of their neighborhood -- unless enough money is raised to stop the construction of the golf course, and that's quite doubtful. But when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map of the famed "One-Eyed" Willy's hidden fortune, Mikey, Brandon, and their friends Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen, Clark "Mouth" Devereaux, Andrea "Andy" Carmichael, Stefanie "Stef" Steinbrenner, and Richard "Data" Wang, calling themselves The Goonies, set out on a quest to find the treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood. The treasure is in a cavern, but the entrance to the cavern is under the restaurant of evil thief Mama Fratelli and her sons Jake Fratelli, Francis Fratelli, and the severely disfigured Lotney "Sloth" Fratelli. Within an hour from seeing The Goonies at the local cinema, I was in the back yard of my house with a shovel looking for buried treasure. Even though I was in Massachusetts and had no clue of any pirates had been there in the past 400 years, I was determined to find "One Eye" Willies treasure behind my house. Seeing this movie for the first time at the age of 8, I was one of millions of kids who were blown away by this Family action / comedy.
A modern day fantasy that is still as good when it came out almost 20 years ago, the story of beating the odds, good verse evil, finding hope in the most unlikely of places, the under dogs winning the day, and the age old take of discovery is what Goonies is all about. An interesting cast which makes the movie, the story is an adventure of youth and exploration, even though they never leave their home state. A terrific movie for the entire family.

Without getting into a slanging match with the previous 5 or so comments, I have to say, people are you puritans with no imagination. This film is superb, it would rank along one of the first films I would ever show my kids as I know they would love it. Cussing ? not a lot ? The scene with Rosita wasn't racist in any way, just funny.
Goonies is a 80's throwback movie that became one of the kids hits of the decade (along with Back to the Future, Teenwolf and the two Star Wars sequels) It tells of a group of kids who find a treasure map and embark on a two hour thrill to recover the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy.
Amusing, great characters and superb script probably sums it up the best and I urge you all to watch the movie, show your kids and your kids kids - to the rest of you who are taking the film far too seriously - get a life, get an imagination, and get out more.
