This is our 2nd video on the new features in Nexus 3. As our final video on it, we will look at the new and improved arpeggiator features trancegate features, and effects. First we will take a look at the arpeggiator. Click on the arpeggiator menu to access it. First, an arpeggiator is a classic synth parameter that takes extended notes played into it and plays them back at different timings to create a new phrase. The sound we currently have is this: Lets solo the sound. We will be applying an arpeggiator to this sound. Choose a layer part or the main (whole thing) to apply an arpeggiator to. This current preset only has 1 layer, but if we had a 2nd and 3rd layer like seen in our previous video, you can apply the arpeggiator to just a single layer as well. When applied to main, the arpeggiator will be applied to all layers. We can assume that main will be most commonly used. Select the tab you want and turn on the arpeggiator button. At this point, it will sound like this: As heard, we can get that classic arpeggiator sound. We can customise the arpeggiator from here as well. We took a look at this area above in our Nexus 2 video as well so check that out for more info, but we'll give just a short description here. First we will choose the direction of pitch movement from "mode". We can choose if the chord will play from low to high notes or fall from high to low and more. Poly doesn't split up the notes, and plays back the notes as a rhythmic phrase. Speed is currently set to 1/8 meaning we get 8th note pumps. We can change this to 16th notes We can choose other subdivisions and triplets as well Gate is the length of the played notes We can find the length that fits the groove best Shuffle adds a little bounce to the sequence to create a little swing. Something like this. The phrase becomes swing if set too high, so its best to use a little bit to add a little flavour and avoid changing the phrase too much. In addition, shuffle is activated when the speed is set to 16th or 32nd note divisions. Be aware that it doesn't function for any other speed amount. Octave determines the span of the phrase played. Its currently set to 1 meaning only the sequenced notes are played. When set to 2, you get the current notes as well as notes from 1 octave above it. The same concept applied to 3 You can easily expand on your phrase like so. We also have presets here with various arpeggiator phrases provided inside. You can read the preset you want to use by double clicking it. Some of you may have realised this already, Sometimes this arpeggiator doesn't reach the end and comes back to the start. This is because we have a chord change in the middle and all of the midi notes have changed. There is a restart setting that retriggers the arpeggiator when hitting a new chord change. There are 2 ways to avoid this. If the first chord and following chord have the same note between them, you can extend it and within this note span, the arpeggiator won't retriever and will continue playing the sequence. In some situations, you may note have a same note between chord (like this current song). In this case, it can be a tiny amount, but we just have to have the previous note extend into the following note. By doing so, The arp sequence continues without restarting when we play the second chord. Be sure to memorize these two methods. In addition, this phrase area in the middle can be customised as well. Right click on an existing note to delete it and right click in an empty area to add a note. Drag it up/down to change the pitch that is played. You can move the notes in half-note increments, but its hard to get the right note when moving it with your mouse. You can use the up/down arrow keys to move the notes easily in small increments, and you can move in octaves by holding the shift key and moving up/down. You can jump down and octave by clicking shift + down arrow key The arpeggiated note length can also be changed by dragging on the end of a note. By editing like so, you can edit similar to how you would on a piano roll in your DAW. This area below relates to the velocity of the notes. By dragging up/down, you can easily add accents to the rhythm. You can save this as a preset once you finish adjusting. You can name it by double clicking this area here. Click on the menu on the right after naming it, and select save preset. By doing so, if you look in the PRESETS list, we can see that its been saved here, allowing us to access it in other songs as well. Another new feature here can be found in the menu called locked. Even when the preset is changed, the arpeggiator stays in place. This allows you to switch out sounds while keeping the arp sequence in tact. Now lets change tracks and look at the new SEQ (sequence) mode in the arpeggiator. It is structured like a piano roll in a DAW, and by sequencing in the phrase you want, you can sequence a phrase from a single extended note. First change the mode to seq, and choose the speed subdivision. We selected 1/16, meaning this grid is divided into 16th notes. We have 4 16th notes making up 1 phrase, and because its too short, and this can be adjusted by dragging "length" on the left. Here we have 16 grids making up 1 bar. This length is related to the arpeggiator from earlier, and the pattern length can be changed from length as well. Now lets go back to sequence, and sequence in notes. Right click on an empty spot to enter a note. Right click on an existing note to delete it. We will go ahead and sequence in some notes. Drag on the end of a note to lengthen/shorten it as well. Lets give a listen to what we've sequenced here. As we can hear, this phrase is repeated as long as this note here is being played. One precaution here: Current this song is in E minor. We currently have the note E sequence in here, and Nexus creates a phrase relative to the pitch of the note here, meaning that although the sequenced note is "C" in Nexus, the note being played is E. For example if we took this and changed the note to "A". The C played in Nexus becomes an A, So be sure to keep this in mind when sequencing. Next we have the Trancegate function. By just turning on this feature, long played notes can be turned into rhythmic sounds. Now with it on. Like the arpeggiator, it can be applied to individual layers. Right click in an empty area to add a note, and right click a note to delete it. This works the same way as the arpeggiator. When mono is selected from the mode, the right/left have the same pattern, but by selecting stereo, you can have different rhythms on the right/left. The speed is currently set to 1/32 note grids, and we can change a single note's division from here. If we give this a listen: You can see that we have different patterns on the right/left. Many presets are available as well; simply double click to open them. There are many useful presets available, and you can customise them depending on the style of the track you are making. Lastly, lets take a look at the new effects section. Click on the effects menu to access the effects. We have the type of effect listed above, and you can turn them on/off by clicking them. The filter/delay/reverb are all related to the panels on the sides. Because of this, turning off one of these effects also turns on it's respective panel. It has a simple color schemed layout making it easy to follow. Like this, we can instinctually and easily make changes. Lets lower the highs a little. There are 4 total EQ points available, and turning off points you aren't using hides them from the display. Select and EQ point and drag Or you can use the parameters on the sides here to make changes as well. There are 2 inserts available before/after the effects fora total of 4, and you can choose an effect to put in an insert. Distortion, A dry/wet amount can be changed allowing you to easily create a balanced sound. There are special fx such as talk box available as well. This concludes our 2 video series on Nexus 3. As mentioned in our first video, there are lots of highly usable sounds available ready to go, allowing you to choose and use any sounds you like as is, or customise them to your liking to create your own unique sounds. In addition, there are tons of expansion presets available by genre, and although buying them all would cost a considerable amount of money, by purchasing sounds in the genre of your choice, you can further expand on your sound arsenal. If this is the synth you've been looking for, we highly recommend trying it out! If you enjoyed this video, be sure to like and subscribe! Thanks for watching, and see you next time!
