One of my all time favorite movies. Jack Nicholson has the part down perfect and the supporting cast of "nuts" seem to make it all come together perfectly. A low budget film that made millions. The film was set in the 60;s and filmed at the Montana State Hospital in Galen, Montana. The "Chief" in the movie is a good side kick of reality for Jacks character. The reality is also that of what happens to people once put into a insane asylum. Crazy or not. Many times the movie brings you to think, what if it was me" I watch very few movies twice. This is a picture that you can do that ! The "Ringleader" Mr. McMurphy takes charge of movie from the beginning.

I had a Nurse Ratchet or 2 in my own life and when Jack's rage blows he does the EXACT thing I've always said I would too and never knew til now how justified it would have been. I felt his rage and when he's choking her his face trembles I mean come on. this was as real as it gets. There are women like her still today walking free. I think the film should have had it that Nicholson strangled her to the point where enough oxygen was cut off to her brain causing permanent brain damage, and then she herself ended up in a mental hospital.

Your psychoanalyzation of nurse Ratched is right on the money,shes a sociopath who uses psychological warfare to bully and intimidate the weak and sick,and I also believe she suffers from the little big person syndrome where on the inside shes not so self-confident and self assured and she uses her position of power not to help the patients but for her to personally continue to live her own delusion that shes really helping the patients through a strict and and unbending tyrannical coldness towards her patients.

Awesome analysis! There are things I have spotted in that movie but I never figured out about the fountain representing the establishment. McMurphy throwing some water from that fountain on a Monopoly game. What a coincidence! Also did you notice one of the female nurse whose working there. The south american small woman. She almost never talks. She's a kind of minion ghoul working under the totalitarian control of Miss Rachel. Same as all her afro american coworkers. Forman has helmed some great films over the years, but this remains his masterpiece and one of the greatest in the dramedy genre. Excellent direction, screenplay, cinematography, setting, score and acting. All the actors deliver powerhouse performances. In fact many of the actors spent time in a mental institution to get a feel for the real conditions and treatment of patients at the time. Nicholson, Fletcher and Dourif command the screen. The plot revolves around a prison inmate, McMurphy, who feigns anti-social behavior in order to serve out his time in a mental institution. During his initial evaluation he describes despicable and irreprehensible acts he's committed that prompt the doctor to commit him for further evaluation. Once inside it is McMurphy who starts observing. He observes the patients, some commited and some there voluntarily. More importantly he observes head Nurse Ratched. He views her treatment of patients as inhumane through abuse, cruelty, medications and electroconvulsive therapy. That battle of wills begins here. McMurphy decides to practice his own therapy on patients by treating them as human beings as opposed to being castaways from society. Ratched is relentless in her treatment methods. This battle ultimately ends in one of the most disturbing and poetic endings in film history. The plot is flawless, clever, funny, dark, disturbing, violent, unique and cathartic. This remains one of the most memorable and sublime films of all time. This film is a virtuous work of art.

The look in her eye when shes on the floor getting strangled, when Nicholson realizes what hes doing, is one of utter glee, because in that moment she knows shes won. Shes finally broken Mac Murphy. Its a genius moment.

I remember I watched the ending of this movie for the first time while high ages ago, from the part where they get caught to the very end. Back then my tolerance was pretty low but damn, it was such a unique experience and I remember just about every happening, the part where chief escaped just made me cry. To be able to fit all of that intense dialogue and expression into a 3:50  second scene is amazing.  It flows perfectly and it makes you feel that your watching a much longer segment than it really is.  I did not get into 70's cinema until about 10 years ago or so and until then I didn't know what I had been missing.  The, you are a real bitch glance, at the scenes end between RP McMurphy & Nurse Ratchet, is a great glimpse into how they will tolerate one another as the film continues, or not.

She has beautiful eyes. She could stare me down any day. Anyone like the Netflix series on this character? I need to watch the movie again to see how it fits. These men had an after party because they needed some release from being locked up and they even went fishing just to feel that they are alive and then Nurse Ratched comes in! I felt bad for Billy because Nurse Ratched was going to tell his mother and that's why Billy Killed himself! These men were locked up chained up like animals and they were treated like Animals! When you deal with people whose brains are different doesn't mean that they are crazy! Its the outside world that is crazy not them and they were victims of society and the families just dumped them there which I was thought was pretty cold hearted.

What I like about this film is that the patients felt more happy and had the greatest moments of their lives with Mcmurphy rather than being under the tyranny of the nurse.

Nurse Ratched is kind of comparable to Terrence Fletcher from Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, who coincidentally. shares a last name with the Nurse Ratched actress. While Fletcher from Whiplash is the total opposite in tense of physical demeanor of putting out a LOT of rage on his students, Terrence Fletcher maintains his own kind of order through perfection, and that by his rigorous and aggressive methods can music students achieve greatness, since Fletcher shared with Neyman that all the other great musicians came about from aggressive practice and classes. Fletcher also first comes off of friendly, personable, and a good teacher, but once Neyman drums inadequately to Fletcher's tempo does Fletcher start to erupt and it frustrates him that a few of his students aren't at the skill level Fletcher himself wants them to be at. Fletcher and Ratched have their own ways of maintaining and expecting order, but I consistently thought of Fletcher throughout this video. He would a be a cool villain for you to analyze! Fletcher and Ratched are among my top favorite villains.
