I recently watched Interstellar for the first time, and that blew my mind. I thought to myself, How can Nolan top that. This movie is the one that tops it. While yes the two films are different in nature, there are some things that I judge a movie on. Bathroom breaks and attention span. If a film can captivate either one of those, that is a great film. Even some good films can fail to do both. But, if a film can manage to do both of those things, you're in the making for a great and amazing film. This film does all of that, and then some. Nolan tells you just enough about the story to keep you wondering what just happened, while force feeding you the answer in the next scene. But, in the scene that contains the answer, he poses more questions. If you intend on watching this film, avoid spoilers at all costs.
Now, the spoiler part. I'm not going very in-depth spoiler wise, in case anyone accidentally or intentionally reads this review. In the second half of the film, when some characters are now 4 dreams deep, Nolan and the editors do something very interesting here. In the fourth dream, with Mal, Cobb, and Ariadne, the film spends about maybe 4-5 minutes at a time there. Then, when we are three dreams deep, at the hospital with Eames and everyone, the film spends about - lets say - 45s to a minute there at a time. In the second dream, with Arthur at the hotel, the film spends maybe 15s-25s there. In the first dream, with the van falling, the film spends around 5s there at a time. Then, we don't even slip back to reality at all. This, I believe, is supposed to represent the way time feels relative to time in the fourth dream. Time passes so much faster the deeper you go in dreams, so the amount of time we spend in each level, along with the somewhat added slow-mo effect on each level, compares the time in the fourth dream to time in all the others. This is just a little cool fact I noticed towards the end.
Now, the only reason I have this film at 9 is because of how damn confusing this movie can be at times. Sometimes it is clairvoyant what Nolan is conveying, but other times it is so much information to where you feel overwhelmed. But, these conflicts are resolved, making for one heluva good movie. Amazing.
