Despite some questionable structural decisions, Eggers does not fail to deliver an eerie and disturbing cinematic experience.
The film has an unusual setting-2 keepers of a lighthouse on a remote island in the 1890s. When I first heard of this concept I was intrigued to say the least. We open with the keepers (Pattinson and Dafoe) arriving on the island in an unsettling sequence. The first thing I noticed was the uncomfortable 1:1 aspect ratio which helps creating the sense of isolation and claustrophobia as the film progresses. In a film that relies on atmosphere, sound design is very important. Most horrors of this realm use discordant music to unsettle the viewer, however, The Lighthouse" takes an alternative path. The sound design of this film is incredible, we are constantly reminded of the cold setting through the repetitive sound of crashing waves combined with the ominous tone of the foghorn. I can't fault the atmosphere of the film, this use of sound and visuals is a testament to Egger's clear vision of the experience he wanted to simulate.
I would like to touch on the structure of this film. Unfortunately, the opening of the film feels very rushed. We are plunged straight into a hallucinogenic dream state that does not allow much time for building suspense. I would've liked a slightly longer runtime in order to prolong the opening, I believe this would've made the graphic images later in the film even more disorientating.
While the film does include these notable issues, Lighthouse" is a film that will stick in my mind for years to come, possibly earning itself several rewatches in the future.
