Shohin-ken" Yatsusiro-city Kumamoto-pref

"Shohin-ken" Yatsusiro-city Kumamoto-pref

Shohinken is a teahouse built in 1688 by Naoyuki Matsui, the third generation of the Yatsushiro castle of the Higo Hosokawa domain, for his mother, and the size of the garden is about 9,000 square meters.

The pond and forest that existed on the site before the garden was created are incorporated into the garden as they are. Initially, there were no buildings other than the castle that obstructed the view. People at that time could see not only Matsubara on the beach next to it but also Aso and Unzen far away when they climbed the artificial hill, and they were the borrowed scenery of this garden.

Higo irises, which were supposed to be viewed only in flower pots, are specially planted in the open field on a small island in the pond, and are very beautiful during the flowering period in early June. In the Edo period, the Hosokawa clan considered the cultivation of irises as one of the samurai ways. The Edo, Ise, and Higo irises are the three major irises that represent Japan. There is also a water lily in the pond.

Furthermore, it is fun to see the planting of subtropical plants that are typical of southern Kyushu in the garden. But was it because it was hostile to the Shimazu? There is no cycad here.

The white cylindrical water basin in Roji is from the Edo period and is made of limestone mined in Yatsushiro. At that time, the same water base was presented to the Edo Shogunate. You will be amazed at its modern and minimal design. Of the two tea rooms in the garden, "Rinka-an" is from the first year of Genroku when the garden was built.

At the small museum near the entrance, you will be amazed by the handwritten books by Oribe, the black Oribe tea bowls, the Tenmoku tea bowls, and many other masterpieces of tea utensils owned by the Matsui family for generations. This is also a must-see.
