The originals are fresh in my mind as my husband and I did a Bill & Ted marathon It is great to see the original casts back in action, but the weakest link here are the actresses who play Bill & Ted's daughters, they come off as lackluster and do not have enough commitment to the roles to esssentially make female versions of Bill and Ted fun, they are boring, and the scenes with them drag substantially. All the best parts of the film involve the original casts, and especially William Sadler's Grimm Reaper, which for me, highlighted just how much he elevated "Bogus Journey" from a mediocre movie to certain levels of brilliance, he truly elevates every scene of "Face the Music" and shows what an awesome actor he is when he is let loose. I would really love to hear Death's solo album, or at the very least, the repeatedly mentioned epic base solo song "Too Pale to Cry. Maybe a tie in music video?
The problems with this film, reallt stem in it's premise since the second movie ties things up very well, and makes it clear that they fulfilled their mission, but now suddenly 30yrs later, it's never happened? What's worse is when in the first film it is obvious that Bill & Ted are the ones who actually make the future a utopia, we are now led to believe that was never the case? I'm sorry, but it came across as nothing more than cheap PC adaptiation of the original film, and it is truly sad because there could have a been a great movie here, but it is squandered when half the screen time is dedicated to their daughters, whom again, are played by girls who do not really commit to their roles and are not convincing.
The scenes with Bill & Ted hopping through time are great, and there are several fun moments involving them, especially a hilarious counseling session and the opening wedding scene. The first 20 minutes show a lot of promise, again, until we start having their daughters take up huge amounts of screen, and Rufus' daughter as well, whom is also played by a rather poor actress who feels uncommitted to her role. Were this movie made with the same script, but just had more committed actresses, it would have elevated the film substantially. If they could have committed anywhere near the amount that William Sadler does to Death, this film would be a lot more fun, and we could ignore the irritating inconsistencies.
While not necessary or living up to it's potential, it is still enteraining, if only see how well- Winters still plays his role of Bill with the same amount of commitment as before, and actually, I'm impressed by how well the characters have aged, yes, they still have dudes and no ways and stuff like that, but it is sparser, and they do seem tempered by the affects of aging, so I think the progression the characters is good, while still retaining some of the silliness of the past films. I truly wish the daughters played a smaller role or had better actresses portraying them, it was woaful miscasting, and it's too bad.
Definitely worth watching for fans of the original films, but be prepared to be simultaneously pleased and disappointed.
