This was a passion project for Edward Norton, spanning almost 20 years, buying the movie rights to the novel even before it officially hit the bookstores. Norton wrote the script, directed the movie, and stars as detective Lionel Essrog who, because he was an orphan became called Motherless Brooklyn. He suffers from Tourette's but also has a photographic memory, he remembers everything he sees and hears.
In total I was a bit disappointed in the movie. While it is well made and has a superb cast, all the details and connections in the end are a bit fuzzy. It has to do with a powerful man who doesn't let anything get in his way of creating the vision he has for New York City's future, including parks, bridges and developments. Often that involves chasing out the poor to demolish their habitats. And much of it is illegal.
Early in the movie Lionel's mentor and boss is killed and the rest of the movie is his sorting everything out and identifying the guilty parties.

Gugu so damn fine. Who Framed Roger Rabbit had nearly the exact same plot. Saw Motherless Brooklyn twice now. Really good movie but it's not a masterpiece. It's an exceptional first attempt at a vanity project but the downside is that this genre has been played out. The last attempt at a noir film was Black Dahlia and it was a flop. Hollywood doesn't take a chance on noir films anymore.
