松田屋は創業340年の歴史を誇る山口市の名門ホテルです。明治時代に二度にわたり日本国総理大臣を務めた山縣有朋が、自分の故郷である山口に、東京や関西などの財界人や政治家そして高貴な人々をもてなすための近代的な迎賓館として機能をこの松田屋に与えた際、庭も合わせて整備させたと言われています。そもそも松田屋には江戸時代からの庭がありましたが、山縣有朋は京都から庭師・七代目小川治兵衛チームを招聘し古い庭を自分好みにリノベーションさせたと言われています。（松田屋の庭が現在の姿となったのは大正８年頃）七代目・小川治兵衛は言うまでもなく京都無鄰庵の作庭家です。それ故に、松田屋ホテルの庭には無鄰菴を彷彿とさせるものが多々あります。たとえば庭の中心に三角形の芝生の広場を設け、そのまわりを水が流れている点などです。ただし基本的なコンセプトや雰囲気は似ていても、無鄰菴と松田屋の印象は正反対と言えます。無鄰庵は伝統的な日本の庭では見られない針葉樹のモミの木などが植えられ（実は山縣有朋の故郷・山口県萩市の武家屋敷の庭ではモミの木が多く見られます）いたって自然主義的ですが、松田屋の場合は松など正統派の庭木が多く植えられ格式を追求しています。２つの庭を服に例えるなら、無鄰庵がカジュアル服の庭、松田屋は豪華な正装の庭なのです。もし山口を訪れる事があったら是非とも松田屋ホテルに滞在して圧倒的に格式高い豪華な庭を堪能して下さい。

松田屋ホテルに宿泊して庭園を見学するのが最良ですが、宿泊客以外でも庭の見学は可能です。しかし見学は前日の宿泊客がチェックアウトし、当日のチェックインが始まるまでの極短い時間に限られます。松田屋に宿泊しない場合は、訪問前日までに必ず松田屋ホテルに電話で問い合わせ、見学できる時間帯を確認してから出かけて下さい。

Matsudaya Hotel is a prestigious hotel in Yamaguchi City, founded in the Edo period. Aritomo Yamagata, twice as Prime Minister of Japan during the Meiji era, has also added a garden to his hometown, Yamaguchi, to provide this hotel with the function of a guesthouse. Aritomo Yamagata invited a genius gardener, Ogawa Jihei Ⅶ, who was in charge of designing the garden of the annex in Kyoto, Murin-an, from Kyoto to make it a garden. Therefore, there are many things reminiscent of Murin-an in the garden of Matsudaya Hotel. For example, there is a triangular lawn square in the center of the garden, around which water flows. Although the basic concept and atmosphere are similar, unlike the naturalistic Murin-an, the garden of Matsudaya Hotel was a gorgeous place to entertain many business people, politicians and aristocrats. Very formal and luxuriously designed. If you compare the two gardens to clothes, Murin-an is a garden with casual clothes, and Matsudaya is a luxuriously dressed garden. When visiting Yamaguchi, be sure to stay at Matsudaya Hotel and enjoy this gorgeous garden compared to Murin-an in Kyoto.
