By this point in the movie, when the three guys starting kicking Arthur after he was knocked down, I started crying for how down on his luck Arthur seemed to be. He couldn't catch a break. Then when the bullets started flying I loudly whispered, Yes! in the theater and my brother who had seen the movie before said something like, I know, right. You reap what you goddamn sow. I couldn't even control myself when I said that, it was simply automatic. Then when he killed the last guy, I was thinking, Now begins the descent into villainy. IMO, he shouldn't have killed the last guy, the first two were self-defense. But then again, back in those days (and perhaps even today) it might have been better so that there were no witnesses because who is the police going to trust? The single wounded survivor, or the crazy clown man with a history of mental illness? A lot of times I don't blame people for what they do or would do, because it's often really hard to tell what is the most moral option.
