A former boxer Charlie Kenton tries to find a good robot after he finds out his wife died and he had lost twice. When he decided to look for parts in the junkyard, his 11 year old son, Max Kenton finds a dumped robot Atom and says he could be a good candidate however Charlie did not agree with him. But Max decided that Atom could so he restored him and he had won many rounds to WRB (World Robot Boxing). And for the final proof that Atom is good, he had to fight the undefeatable WRB champion, Zeus. Directed by: Shawn Levy

The concept of robots duking it out in a boxing arena doesn't sound like a very promising concept and yet for some reason real steel makes it very interesting, and very entertaining.
The story is in the year 2020 instead of humans fighting in the ring we let robots do all the bashing for us. The plot follows Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) a former boxer himself, he uses robots to fight in the ring, as a means to pay his debt to loan sharks. His robot ambush is destroyed by a bull named Black Thunder.
Charlie discovers that his ex-girlfriend has died, and he is forced to attend a meeting that will decide who will have custody of his son Max, him or Max's Aunt Debra (Hope Davis, an actresses I haven't seen in a wide releases in a long time) and Uncle Marvin. Aunt Debra and Uncle Marvin decide they want to have complete custody of Max, and Charlie agrees to give them custody, only if Marvin agrees to give him 100,000 (half of it in advance) and Charlie agrees to take care of Max for three months while Marvin and Debra are away in Italy on their second honeymoon. Charlie uses his money to buy a robot from his friend Bailey Tallet (Evangeline Lilly) who runs a boxing gym once held by her father (who happens to be Charlie's old coach. Charlie receives a secondhand WRB league robot named Noisy Boy, and arranged for it fight the illegal circus champion Midas, which is run by a friend of his Finn (Anthony Mackie. Charlie loses the battle (and Noisy Boy) because of unfamiliarity and ignorance.
After the fight, Charlie and Max break into a junkyard with hopes of stealing some scraps. By accident Max falls over a ledge, but is saved by a buried robot arm. Charlie manages to pull him back, and Max takes the robot and discovers his name is Atom. Max and Charlie take him back to Bailey's gym, and discover he is a generation 2 (meaning he is obsolete. Max insists that they use him as a force for fighting, but Charlie doesn't agree with him. It isn't until after a outdoor duel with a robot named Metro that Charlie really starts to see the potential with Atom. Winning several more matches results in Max and Charlie being invited by the World Robot Boxing League to face off against a professional robot named Twin Cities, and winning.
After the fight Max arrogantly challenges the WRB champion Zeus (a robot that has never suffered a single blow in it's entire fighting career) to a fight. Eventually Max and Charlie fight Zeus resulting in a final battle, that you have to see to believe.
Real Steel is a very well done film, the directing by Shaun Levy (If you looked at his previous credits you'd be surprised that someone like him directed this film) is really well done. The script is spot on, keeping you both engaged and informed at the same time. The acting is great (although I admit that Hugh Jackman's accent was a little bit distracting at times, given his previous work. Jackman delivers a great performance as a jackass loner-type who is also arrogant. Dakota Goyo shows promises an up and coming actor (he was also in Thor earlier this year playing a younger version of the god of thunder) and does a good job at playing a boy who's clearly embarrassed by the man who happens to be his father, but later comes to appreciate him. Evangeline Lilly doesn't seem to be too much more than Eye-Candy in her role as an old friend of Charlie (although admittedly she isn't given much to do) and Hope Davis is great as a spineless rich aunt (but she isn't in the film very much. Karl Yune also has a great role as the villain of the story Tak Mashido (a real dick-head if you ask me. You clearly tell by his performance that he's having a great time playing a guy who will not admit defeat. Another plus is how cool the robots look.
Real Steel also does a great job at working as a father/son movie, touching on the aspects of a son and the father he never knew - type relationship. Charlie knows that he can't give his son Max a great life, and Max barely even knows who his father is. As the story progresses however, the relationship between the characters grows with both of them coming to understanding about the other.
Overall Real Steel was a real winner for me. It was very engaging and often entertaining. I haven't been this entertained in the movies in a long time. Go see it, I'm sure you'll have a great time.
