「竹香園」宮崎県飫肥市

宮崎県で貴族院議員を3期務めた高橋源次郎の飫肥市の別邸跡に残された明治中期の池泉回遊式庭園です。現地の案内板に書かれた説明によりますと桃山式庭園だそうです。池泉回遊式なので庭の中を回遊することができます。別邸の建築は全て失われていますが、かって茶室や庵があった場所には少し西洋的で山小屋風ではありますが四阿が建てられているので往時と同じポジションに座りゆっくりと庭を鑑賞することが出来ます。竹香園は、山の傾斜地の麓に池を作り主庭として、庭内にはその名前にもなっている「竹」や笹などが多く植えられています。池泉には岩島が浮かび「くの字」型の石橋が印象的です。橋の先には立派な雪見灯籠が置かれています。池の中島には2棟が合体した四阿がありさながら浮き殿のようです。中島へは石橋で渡ることができます。島の四阿のそばには蹲が置かれ昔は茶室として使われていたことをうかがわせます。池には州浜があり岩島も浮かんで美しい影を水面に落としています。池の背後の山の傾斜を築山としており、庭全体を見渡せる高い場所に四阿があります。竹香園の周囲は現在は住宅地になっていますが、往時は築山より見渡せば庭はもとより背後の山など飫肥郊外の豊かな自然風景を一望とし、それらが庭と一体になっていました。さぞ壮大な眺めだったことしょう。築山のすぐ下に小さな滝があり流れ下る水は小川となり池へと続きます。このあたりには多くのタニワタリが露地植えされ温暖な気候の宮崎らしい庭園景観となっています。平地の邸跡には銅像や記念碑などが建てられ西洋公園風です。しかしこちらにも枯山水庭がありますので見落とさないでください。

さて、最後に、池のほとりの中国の仙人のような石像について触れておきたいと思います。この像が誰なのかとても気になったので調べたのですがわかりませんでした。しかしこれは「老子」ではないかと思います。もちろん完全な私見ですが、この像が古代中国風の衣を身にまとった老人で、しかも池のほとりに置かれいることから「上善如水」という老子の有名な言葉にちなんでいるのでは？「上善は水のごとし、水はよく万物を利して争わず、衆人の恵む所に処る。」難しくてうまく説明できませんが、「最高の善は水のようなものでなければならない。」「水は万物を助け、育てて自己を主張せず、だれもが嫌うような低い方へと流れて、そこにおさまる」という意味でしょうか。高橋源次郎は政治家として日本に尽くすべく老子の教えに傾倒していたと思われます。江戸時代から明治にかけての時代は、老子・孟子・孔子の教えを身につけることが高い教養を持つ人間の証であり、それらは武士の生き方にも大きな影響を与えています。それらの教えが大陸で形骸化し、単なる上下関係の位置付けだけに終始していたのとは対照的に、それらの真の教えは日本人によって実践されていたのかもしれません。高橋源次郎は、竹香園の池に浮かぶ庵で水辺を眺めながら、老子の「上善如水」の教えに思いを馳せていたのでしょう。また竹林が風に揺れ葉音を鳴らす築山の庵では高橋家の本邸の襖絵に描かれている「竹林七賢」の世界に想いを馳せていたのかもしれません。この竹香園の庭は高橋源次郎が終生胸に抱き続けた古代中国の思想家たちへの尊敬と憧れを形にしたものだったのではないでしょうか。各地の日本庭園を巡りながら私たちはこうして日本の先達たちの尊い「知」や「志」に触れることがあります。これも日本庭園鑑賞の大いなる楽しみの一つではないでしょうか。

また、竹香園は裏山を登った場所に広大なスポーツグラウンドがありその周辺に桜が植樹され飫肥一番の桜の名所として親しまれています。毎春桜祭りが開催されるそうです。その頃に再訪したいものだと思いました。

It is Chisen kaiyu-shiki teien left in the villa trace of Takahashi Genjiro. Genjiro Takahashi was a member of the House of Lords in Meiji era, he is a politician representing Obi - town. The garden was made in the middle of Meiji period. You can walk in the garden. All the buildings in the separate residence are lost, but the gazebos are built in the place where the tea room was, so you can sit in the same position as the old people and calm down and appreciate the garden. "Chikko-en" is a main garden that makes a pond at the foot of the slopes of the mountain, and many "bamboo" which is also the name is planted in the garden. A rocky island floats in the pond, and a stone bridge shaped like a boomerang is impressive. Beyond the bridge is a fine Yukimi lantern placed. In Nakajima of the pond there is a gazebo where the two buildings merge, it is like a floating palace. You can cross the island with a stone bridge. Tsukubai (water basin) is located near the island's gazebos, so you can see that this was a tea room in the past. There are state hills in the pond and the rocky islands float and drop a beautiful shadow on the water surface. The slope of the mountain behind the pond is Tsukiyama, and there is another gazebo in a high place overlooking the entire garden.

Currently, Cikko-en's surroundings are residential areas, but in the past you could see the mountains and rich natural landscapes, if you looked around from the gazebo, those sceneries were united with the garden. A small waterfall is just under Tsukiyama, the flowing water becomes a stream and continues to the pond. Many Taniwatari are planted in this area and it is a Miyazaki-like garden landscape with a temperate climate. A bronze statue and a monument are built in the site of the mansion of the flatland and it is a Western park style. But here also Karesansui garden, so do not overlook it.
