I experienced a real life Big Nurse Ratched type. She was head nurse in a children's convalescent home where I was a 12 year old patient. Her name is lost to me but I see her clearly. She was a tall, imposing, good looking, 30-ish redhead resembling a certain actress famous for a TV show bearing her name. I'll call her Big Red Nurse. She never missed a chance to pull my hair or otherwise paw me. It was so frequent I began hiding from her. Upon reflection, her touching was always with no witnesses. As an adult I learned about pedophilia and that pedophiles can be women attracted to boys which reminded me of this childhood experience. A striking memory was Big Red Nurse forcing me into the bathroom of my 4 person ward room and shutting the door behind us. Once in there, I waited for whatever torment was coming but she just stood and stared at me, excited and agitated. She said and did nothing for a few moments and then opened the door and left. No one saw or knew of this except Big Red Nurse and the other three children in that room. Nothing came of it and only as an adult did this behavior take on sexual implications. A related memory was of the oldest boy on the ward. He was perhaps 13 with a slight mustache. He had an isolated room by himself and his own TV set. TV was a luxury in 1951 and having TV at all was as odd as a private room. As head nurse, she must have made the decision to put him by himself. Her suspicious fixation on me raises questions about the pubescent teenager's treatment. So Nurse Ratched is a real type. The other kids and Big Red Nurse herself are lost in time so I can't cross check with others memories. People with custodial power over others, particularly over children, need strict vetting and oversight.

In the the 60's, the state of mental healthcare was put them away and keep them under control. That was exactly what was expected of Ratched, and exactly what she did. I mean, my Drill Instructors were not kind people, but they were good at their job. Then along comes McMurphy, who has multiple imprisonments for violent crimes, and he's pretending to be mentally ill to get out of jail. He's putting all of the other patient's in peril both physically and emotionally. The 70's were a time when anti-hero's were becoming popular. But he's not that, he's just dangerous. Who was the real villain in this movie.

It really scores high for realistic acting. Nicholson's performance is absolute gold. The film also mixes humour and drama extremely well, one minute we're laughing only then to descend into sadness. Powerful. The film also has respect for its characters, although not to the point of becoming sappy and being afraid to use them for comic effect when appropriate. Nicholson isn't the only actor to watch out for - everyone is on form, there's not a weak performance in the whole picture. Each character is crafted and endearing (or realistically menacing in the case of Louise Fletcher. Special note must be made of Sydney Lassick as Cheswick, a nice little character and a fine portrayal. The film is extremely quotable and full of memorable scenes.

"One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" is a great movie that deserved applauses around the world. Nicholson deserved the "Best Actor" Oscar for his performance as R.P. McMurphy and the screenplay was good too. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that Louise Fletcher won the Oscar for "Best Actress." Nothing against Fletcher but her performance wasn't that great as I expected it to be.
I've never read the Ken Kesey novel but it must be a masterpiece if the movie is.
Overall, this was a very depressing movie. I didn't know that Jack Nicholson was going to die and I almost cried when Chief left the building. But I can see why he did the things he did. Billy was another sad character.
This is a. film and one of Nicholson's best.
