I liked Dune when I first saw it and now I watched the alternate fan version, which is longer, to understand what I liked then and what Lynch wanted to do.
Loving Herbert's work and pretty much disdaining Lynch's, I come to comprehend now that Dune is a bad movie. It is a low budget, Italian movie that somehow managed to appear American. It had a most ridiculous script and some of the scenes are simply hilarious (see Patrick Stewart shout Long Live the Duke! while going into battle with a small dog in his arms. It more or less ignored 90% of the Herbert book. Yet it somehow captured its spirit, which is more than the other adaptation succeeded.
The moral is that if you have read the books, your brain will fill in the blanks while watching the movie and it will seem more than it actually is by itself. This raises interesting questions: should a movie be a visual representation of a book or its companion, provoking thought and offering different perspectives?
My conclusion is that the weirdness of the movie and the inner voices of the characters somehow expressed more of the feel of the book than the scene by scene reproduction from the 2000 miniseries. I hope that the new rumored Denis Villeneuve adaptation will manage to be faithful to the book in both story and spirit, although I think it will be very difficult to do in film format.
