徳富蘇峰・徳冨蘆花、兄弟の生家。兄の徳富蘇峰は明治・大正時代に、ジャーナリスト、歴史家、思想家として活躍。弟の徳富蘆花は「不如帰（ほととぎす）」、「自然と人生」など数々の名作を生みだした文豪でした。

二人の生家は、寛政二年（１７９０年）徳富家中興の祖・徳富久貞により建てられたもので、明治３年（１８７０年）、蘇峰・蘆花の父一敬（淇水）が熊本藩庁に招かれ一家が熊本に移り住むまでの８０年間、徳富家はこの家に住み続けました。その後、明治２２年からは西村家の商家（屋号：衣屋）として代々受け継がれ、現在残された建物は徳富家時代の３棟（主屋・蔵・はなれ）と、西村家時代の２棟（主屋・蔵）の５棟。坪庭は江戸時代に作庭された徳富家時代のもの。池の周囲に磯石と川石をバランスよく緻密に配置し、池には彫刻により製作された石橋が架けられ、小さいゆえに緻密かつ贅沢な設えとなっている。主木は松だが、モミジなども植えており季節の彩りを添えることも忘れていない。基本的には座観式庭園で、客間である奥の座敷側が見付・正面だが反対側の廊下からも鑑賞可能となっている。奥座敷の手前にあるもう一つの接客用の表座敷付書院の障子を開くと坪庭の石灯籠が見えるようになっている。この表座敷の竿縁天井は竿縁が槍や刀のように一族の主人を表す床の間に向かう武家屋敷でしか見られない「床挿し」の設えとなっているが、これはたとえ商人になっても徳富家の祖先が武士であったことを忘れないためのもの。

The birthplace of Tokutomi Soho and Tokutomi Roka. His older brother Tokutomi Soho was active as a journalist, historian, and thinker during the Meiji and Taisho eras. His younger brother Tokutomi Roka was a literary master who produced many masterpieces such as "The Cuckoo" and "Nature and Life".

The birthplace of the two was built by Tokutomi HIsasada, the founder of the Tokutomi family in 1790. In 1870, Soho & Roka's father got a job at the Kumamoto Prefectural Office. The Tokutomi family continued to live in this house for 80 years before he moved to Kumamoto. After that, the ownership was transferred to the Nishimura family from 1887, and the remaining buildings are the three buildings of the Tokutomi family (main house, warehouse, and Hanare) and the two buildings of the Nishimura family period (main house, warehouse). ) 5 buildings. Tsubo-niwa is from the Tokutomi family, which was created in the Edo period. Iso stones and river stones are arranged in a well-balanced and precise manner around the pond, and a sculptural stone bridge is built over the pond, making it a precise and luxurious setting due to its small size. The main tree is a dignified pine tree, but there are also maples, and the designer of this garden has not forgotten to add seasonal colors. This garden is basically designed to be viewed from inside, and the back room, which is the guest room, can be viewed from the front, but also from the corridor on the opposite side. When you open the small window of another customer service room, you can see the stone lanterns in Tsubo-niwa.
