When I first saw the promotional image for this, I thought it was a Girls spinoff series about Elijah and his three gay friends. Dear HBO, can we have an Elijah spinoff series? You could call it Boys.

The boys in the band review.

I'm old now, but I can relate to all these bands. My first concert was NKOTB, in Shreveport, I was one of the many fans, screaming my heart out, couldn't talk normally for two days, but oh be still my 13 year old heart. I find pins in my stuff now and then and my heart warms with all the good memories of watching the VHS tapes of their concerts, there was 2 if i remember correctly. Wonder if I can get them on DVD? Only cruise I'd go on.

Perfectly cast and well acted film of a stagey stage-play. It's been opened out a little here and there, but since its claustrophobia is part of its power, I don't know that letting us out of the New York apartment in which it takes place is particularly helpful.
The play has historical significance, in that author Mart Crowley aimed at and succeeded in capturing the self-loathing of a then despised part of the American population. It was particularly galling that the gay community of New York City was treated with contempt at the time, given the central role it played in much for which the city was admired and famous for throughout the world. Within a year of the first production, the worm turned at the Stonewall Inn. The Boys in the Band is what life was like in New York before Out and Proud became an option. Twenty years later, the wider population, led by the American government, turned its collective back on gay people to devastating effect, leaving the community adrift to face the AIDS crisis. That period's chronicler was Larry Kramer. who died just a couple of months after Mart Crowley in this year of pandemic, 2020.
So much for the historical gap. That between Crowley and Kramer as writers is largely one of dramatic self-restraint. Kramer had no talent for it, whereas Crowley seems trapped by it. THE NORMAL HEART is a prolonged howl of pain and anger, while THE BOYS IN THE BAND, its one moment of violence aside, is dedicated to sharp stiletto stabs. So many, that the overall trauma endured by this group of birthday party guests is submerged by slow-death melodrama.
The playscript, then, its truths notwithstanding, is creaky. That was just as true when the film with the original, off-Broadway cast was made in 1970 as it is here, with its 50th anniversary revival cast. What we do get, because all these actors know these roles inside out, is a detail and depth in performance that most Hollywood films never achieve, because the actors get so little chance to rehearse. But look here at Matt Bomer, in the under-written part of Donald, listening to everything being said with the attention of someone who is really in the room. Same with, Michael Benjamin Washington, who is nuanced and truthful in another of the less flashy roles. Which is not to undersell those whose lines do flash: Jim Parsons, Robin de Jesús, and Zachary Quinto are all excellent, as are Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins
Brian Hutchison and Charlie Carver. Joe Mantello, no mean actor himself, directs what was undoubtedly a first-rate theatre production, but as a film it primarily has historical value, just as had producer Ryan Murphy's parallel project of THE NORMAL HEART. Historical, but not irrelevant.
I write this when to be gay in certain countries in the world carries the risk of a death sentence. In Poland, the rights of gay people are increasing the curtailed as the government finds it useful to find scapegoats. As is the case in Russia, too. I write this before the Supreme Court in the USA is likely to face a new direction. The battles may well have to start anew, and yesterday's historical document may need to become tomorrow's manifesto.

Hey, tq for mentioning BTS. Its an honor

The boys in the band stories. So no one talking about Hank and Larry? 😢. The boys in the band cast 2018. Interesting analysis. Incredible film/play. So underrated. Extraordinary performances, every single actor. Harold was a former figure skater and I did not think that Michael was an actor. I felt Cliff Gorman's portrayal of Emory was a bit too much. Looking forward to seeing it on Broadway soon.

Absolutely perfect. Flawless.

I saw it recently and I have to say that its all Ryans personalities at that party. Kidding aside I like that I knew all the personality traits of these men. If you know you know. 💋.

Thank you for this analysis. it is needed and couldn't be more welcome and correct. it makes me sad when this film and this play get reduced and put into a negative light. when people characterize it as of simply a parade of self-hating stereotypes. as you pointed out it is not that. and mart crowley has carefully crafted the piece to be anything BUT that. when someone criticizes the self-hatred in the piece, it always shows me they have no idea of the very recent history of gay men and women in america. they have no understand of life as a gay man or lesbian pre-stonewall. they have no knowledge of the laws of not so long ago. that simply gathering together as a group, gay men rendered themselves criminal. the police could literally have busted this very party and arrested all of them right there. it shows me that they have no knowledge that being homosexual was still very much on the list of psychological illnesses for which one could be committed. and committed for as long as the family or doctor saw necessary. with the patient having no rights or ability to fight what was happening. THIS IS FACT. how can that get so lost? gay men were at best a mean punchline or an embarrassing joke if they were portrayed in the media. or they were portrayed as something disgusting that could contaminate others. and lesbians were simply not even allowed to even exist. they were even more invisible. which i feel is worse. the characters in this piece are defiant in being who they are. radically so. brave. forging the way, though they didn't even know it at the time. so it is especially galling to have so many young people disregard this play as a self-hating relic. where young people are in terms of lgbtq history and truth? the striking changes in our culture- the progress- all came from men like the ones in this film! how can they not see this? and honor it? it is just devastating to me. also, this group of men are family to each other. yes, a dysfunctional crazy family. a family who can be savage to one another. but like a family, ultimately they stick together and take care of each other. this generation's response when the AIDS crisis began literally killing them is undeniable proof of this. even sadder to me, is that this younger generation, the very ones who criticize this film, are not connected like a family. they aren't for the most part. so if something like AIDS hit their generation i fear they would not know what to do. they would not be able to come together and help each other. i genuinely hope i am wrong about all this. but it worries me. thank you for posting this. and for such a great analysis of such a seminal work.

And if it emphasizes some gay stereoptypes. So what.

It's simple and easy to understand why marginalized groups would wish to be different. Gay to be straight. Black to be white. Female to be male, and so forth. Society does not encourage happiness, only conformity, or prejudice. Unless your born a white straight male, you may never know the lonely feeling of exclusion. And, believe me, many still wish to reinforce this separation in sometimes extreme and dangerous degrees around the world. And totally delude themselves of the rightness of this behavior.

The Boys in the bend wizards. At NO time in the past forty-six years have I ever gotten the impression that Michael is an actor, failed or otherwise. And where does the theory that Donald's psychotherapy is an attempt to cure his homosexuality come from? No where in the text or performance is this suggested. The problem with this analysis of the film (and by inference, the play) is that it is based on the life experiences of whom I assume is a heterosexual woman. It is off-base on almost every point.

Geez how do you know? were u taking pictures. The Boys in the bandit. Rest in peace Mart Crowley. The older I get the more I see how true to life this film was and likely always will be. The boys in the band movie 2020

I just watched and it and ehhhh. I mean I liked it at first, but after awhile I was growing tired. I get its based on a play and so its going to be "talkie" but I was really starting to feel the length. And I get its supposed to be this deep intimiate piece where each character reveal something about themselves, some dark truths but like the majority of the characters were just not very likable and they were all mean to one another. Like, why are these people's friends besides the fact that they're probably the only people they can be themselves with. But maybe that's the point.
Acting wise it was good. Jim Parsons does feel very Sheldon Cooper-y for a good chunk of the film, but I think definitely pulls some acting chops out there during the last 15-20 min.
I didnt hate it. I just felt that once Harold showed up, it started feeling less natural. And by that I mean that they felt like real people but then started feeling like characters in a movie. Their dialogue too snappy or too poetic etc. I dont know if Im really explaining myself well.

OMG I love this. 😁 It was like memory lane on steroids for me. I miss the 80's and 90's SO MUCH ❤️. Well I'm 61 now and loved this film when I was young man. Love the 2020 version also.
