熊本市にある花岡山（はなおかやま）の麓にある公園で、熊本藩主細川家の菩提寺妙解寺（みょうげじ）跡として、国の史跡に指定されています。妙解寺は細川家三代、初代熊本藩主である忠利（細川三斎の息子）の菩提寺。明治の廃仏毀釈で廃寺となりました。現在では・熊本市が細川家から譲り受け公園として整備、一般に公開しています。入口の門をくぐった右手にあるチケットオフィスの裏手に妙解寺の枯山水が残されています。庭園としてはかなり雑な保存のされ方で、景観への配慮は無く、進入禁止のロープを渡した柵で囲われた残念な状況です。廃仏毀釈で廃寺となった際にこの枯山水が属していたお堂は消失しています。しかし。残されたその石組みは大変美しく見事なものです。築山にそそり立つように尖った立石を据え、その下部に滝に見立てた石を組んでいます。高低差のある縦の線を強調し、薄い石を使う形式はおなじく熊本市内の「清爽園」に残された細川藩大名庭園「陽春庭」の滝石組とよく似ており華麗で江戸初期のダイナミックさを感じさせます。面白いのは手前の砂の上にポツンと鯉魚石が置かれていることです。この配置は枯山水では珍しい設えだと思いますが、雪舟作の常栄寺心字池の竜門瀧でも鯉魚石は同様に滝よりかなり手前に置かれていますのでけっしておかしいことではありません。しかし、ポツンと大海に置かれ滝のぼりに挑む直前の孤独感を際立たせる設えは色んな意味で厳しさを感じさせ興味深いと感じずに入られません。またこの庭の隣にも小規模な石組みの枯山水があり、その砂庭の真ん中にも石灰石の小さな丸石が置かれています。これらが連続する一つの庭園なのか別の庭かは不明ですが、共通する特徴です。またチケットオフィスの真裏に遠山石でしょうか？さながら連峰のように横たわる横長の石組が置かれています。他に昭和時代に熊本市がここを公園化した際に作られた池と小川の庭園がありますが、水を公園前にある排水状態が悪い江戸時代の堀へ流すしかないため現在では池と鑓水の庭の水はからっぽです。また、公園の奥にある長い急な石段を登ると、熊本県の重要文化財に指定されている細川家の霊廟（れいびょう）があります。霊廟は、細川忠利とその妻、細川家四代の光尚公の三つが並び、脇にそれぞれ殉死した人々の墓があり、歴史を感じさせます。

"Kitaoka Natural Park" Kumamoto Prefecture

It is a park at the foot of Mt. Hanaoka in Kumamoto City, and is designated as a national historic site as the site of the Bodaiji Temple of the Hosokawa clan, the lord of the Kumamoto domain. Myogeji Temple is the family temple of Tadatoshi (son of Sansai Hosokawa), the third generation of the Hosokawa clan and the first lord of the Kumamoto domain. It was abandoned due to the abolition of Buddha in the Meiji era. Currently, ・ Kumamoto City has developed it as a park inherited from the Hosokawa family and is open to the public. The Karesansui garden from the time when Myogeji Temple was located is left just to the right after passing through the entrance gate. There is no consideration for the scenery due to the rough preservation, and it is a pity that it is surrounded by a fence with ropes. (Kumamoto City was severely damaged by the earthquake several years ago and is still under reconstruction.)

In the first place, when the temple was abandoned due to the abolition of Buddha in the Meiji era, the temple to which this Karsesansui garden belonged has disappeared, leaving only stones. However, the remaining garden is very beautiful. A sharp stone is placed at the highest point of Tsukiyama (artificial hill) so that it rises, and a dry waterfall stone set is made below it. The format that emphasizes the vertical lines with height differences is very similar to the stonework of the waterfall of the Daimyo Garden "Yoshun Garden" of the Hosokawa Domain, which was left in the "Seiso Garden" in Kumamoto City. What is interesting is that the carp and carp stones are placed on the sand in the foreground. This arrangement is unusual. Next to this garden is a small stone-framed Karesansui, with a small round stone of white limestone in the middle of the sand. It's unclear if these two gardens are one or another in a row. Just behind the ticket office, there is a horizontally long stone set that looks like a mountain range. There is also a pond and a stream garden created by Kumamoto City when it became a park in the Showa era, but nowadays there is no choice but to drain the water into the moat in the Edo period, which is easily clogged due to poor drainage in front of the park. The water is empty. Climbing the long steep stone steps in the back of the park, you will find the Hosokawa clan's mausoleum, which is designated as an important cultural property of Kumamoto Prefecture. The mausoleum is a historical building in the early Edo period.
