もしかしたら・・・

Hi everybody.

Today in my Survival English Class one student said to me 「もしかしたら土曜日に来れるかもしれない」 and then asked me, “How do you say 「もしかしたら」 in English. There really isn`t a word for 「もしかしたら」 in English but for 「もしかしたら何々が出来るかもしれない」

let`s use this pattern:

I might be able to + 原形

So 「もしかしたら土曜日に来れるかもしれない」 in English is…

I might be able to come on Saturday.

“Might” の代わりに “may” も使っても大丈夫です。　意味とニュアンスが変わりません。 

For example…

・I may be able to come on Saturday.

Here are some more examples:

・I might be able to finish work early today. (もしかしたら今日仕事が早く終わるかもしれない。)

・I may be able to help you. (もしかしたら手伝えるかもしれない。)

否定文の場合はこのパターンを使いましょう:

I might not be able to + 原形 

For example…

・I might not be able to come tomorrow. (もしかしたら明日来れないかもしれない。)

・I may not be able to take a summer vacation this year. 

(もしかしたら今年は夏休みを取れないかもしれない。)
