少しだけ

Hi everybody!

This afternoon a student asked me, “How do you say ｢少しだけ」 in English?” 

That`s a good question! But English and Japanese are very different languages so the answer is not so simple. 

 英語と日本語は全然違う言語だから答えはそんなに簡単じゃないけど、少しだけ練習すれば使えるようになりますよ！

There are two ways to say 「少しだけ」 in English.

①数えられない物の場合は…
“There`s only a little” を使いましょう。

②数えられる物の場合は…
“There are only a few” を使いましょう。

Here are some examples…

・I have only a little money. 

(“Money” は数えられない名詞ですから “a little money” は correct and natural Real English です。)

・There‘s only a little sugar. 

“Sugar” and 全ての粉の物は数えられない名詞ですから “a little sugar” が正しいです。

”A few sugar” って言ったら変に聞こえます。普通のネイティブは何故それがおかしいか分からないかもしれないけど絶対言わないですが物によって違うけど普通の会話ではネイティブが数えられない物をよく数えられる物にするんです。

例えば、” a few sugars”（スティックシュガーなどを数えるとき） や “a few beers” はネイティブによく使われている Real English です。

“There`s only a little sugar” も “There are only a few sugars” も普通です。

・I have only a few friends.

・There are only a few customers in the store.

If we practice a little we can learn how to use “a few” and “a little.” 

(少しだけ練習すれば使えるようになりますよ！ってことで、動詞の場合は “a little” を使います。 For example, “practice a little!!”)
