After surviving disasters and beasts in the fictional prehistoric "Croodaceous" era, the Croods find themselves in need of a new place to live. "Dad always says the pack stays together, " Stone's Eep Crood says as the family flies through the air on the back of their saber-tooth-esque cat predator. "Now, we're searching for a perfect place to call home. " When they stumble upon a walled-in paradise, complete with a towering treehouse and irrigated acres of colorful, fresh produce, it seems like they've stumbled into the perfect place. But they soon discover that it's not ripe for the taking as it currently belongs to the Bettermans, an evolved family. Believing cave people "died off years ago, " the Bettermans — "emphasis on the better" — are somewhat fascinated by the Croods, who they see as less-evolved, and agree to welcome them as their houseguests. The Croods' arrival to their new home has its perks, including new relationships and access to modern amenities like a "bird window" and sandals. But Cage's patriarch Grug isn't taking well to all the changes, and tension between both families begins to grow. So when Eep takes the Betterman's daughter, Dawn (Tran), outside their towering wall, both families are suddenly thrust into an adventure that may see them forging a new future together. "The only way to survive is if the pack stays together, " Cage's Grug says. The Croods sequel was initially announced back in 2013 after the DreamWorks film grossed more than $580 million worldwide, garnered Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Production on the film was then halted in 2016 after layoffs following Universal's acquisition of DreamWorks. In 2017, the animation studio announced that the film was back on. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] In April 2013, DreamWorks Animation announced a sequel to the film The Croods, with Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco set to return as directors. [5] According to DeMicco, the sequel would focus on Ugga and motherhood, making it "the first chapter of society, " expanding on the first film, which he said is about "the last chapter of the caveman. " [6] On June 12, 2014, it was announced that the sequel would be released on November 3, 2017. [7] On August 21, 2014, the film was pushed back to December 22, 2017. [8] On August 9, 2016, nearing Comcast 's impending acquisition of DreamWorks Animation, 20th Century Fox removed the film from the release schedule.
