室町時代、雪舟がパトロン・大内氏のために作庭した庭です。西北東・三方向を山に囲まれた敷地に、滝を持つ池と枯山水を並列させ大海と大地を表現したスケールの大きな庭です。かって池に密集していた睡蓮はとりのぞかれ本来の岩島の配置などが大変わかりやすくなりました。また、後年の見立てにより枯山水の景石を富士石と称しその周囲に富士の裾野型に剪定した皐月を植えていたのですが、それらが取り除かれ本来あるべき姿に戻されています。この庭は回遊式庭園であると同時に本堂室内からの座鑑式庭園でもありますが本堂からでは池が遠すぎてよく見えずどこか釈然としません。実は池に関しては今では失われた池の西に迫り出すように建っていた「迎月亭」からの景観を最も重視していたようです。たとえば蓬莱山に見立てた石や池に浮かぶ鶴島が明らかに迎月亭の方を正面にして配置されているからです。この池は心字型で亀島・鶴島・舟石などがわかりやく配置され、北東には龍門之滝の大規模な滝石組がありますしこの滝も迎月亭の位置からが最も美しい姿を見せてくれます。また出島の形状は同時代の室町期に夢窓疎石が作庭した京都天龍寺「曹源池」と共通する特徴を示しています。さらに、枯山水の景観はすぐそばに建っていた「書院」からの景観を最も重要視していたようです。しかし、この庭が池と枯山水のどちらも同時に楽しめるリバーシブルな形式であることはもちろんですし、枯山水という庭園ジャンルを新たに日本庭園の世界にもたらした雪舟の功績は大きすぎると言わざるを得ません。西日本を中心に雪舟作と伝わる庭は多いですがここは間違いなく雪舟作。各地の伝・雪舟作の庭を巡ると常栄寺との共通点が確認できることがよくあります。各地を巡って皆さんも共通点を探してみてください。なお、本堂南の「南溟庭」は昭和の偉大な作庭家・重森三玲の作で見逃せません。

This garden was created by Sesshu for Patron Ouchi during the Muromachi period. It is a large-scale garden that expresses the ocean and the earth by arranging a pond with a waterfall and a dry landscape garden on a site surrounded by mountains in three directions in the west-northeast. The water lilies that were once crowded in the pond have been removed, making it very easy to understand the original layout of Iwashima. In addition, the dry landscape garden has been restored to its original form by removing the Satsuki stone, which was called Fuji stone. This garden is both a strolling garden and a sitting garden that you can see from inside the main hall, but the pond is too far to see. In fact, it is undeniable that the original viewing point was to look at the pond on the left and the dry landscape garden on the right from a close distance to the tower (tea room) that was lost in the west. There are many gardens that are said to be made by Sesshu, but this is definitely made by Sesshu. You can often see the commonalities with Jyoei-ji Temple by visiting the gardens of Sesshu and other temples. Please go around and look for it.
