I grew up a massive fan of Star Wars. I've seen every movie dozens of times and I will forever be a fan. of the memories.
Unfortunately, the original triology has aged like milk. This movie, along with the other two, will always be a cherished memory for me, but I can't in good conscience bring myself to still consider this a good film. The dialogue, graphics (yes, I know) and narrative just don't stand the test of time.
As much as it pains me to say it, the original trilogy is outdated.
One of the best movies I have ever seen, a world of fantasy and high ideals which inspired many. a classic.
Because of the "transcendental" scenes of this movie(like the ones of Luke's training on Dagobah) I rate this the best Star Wars movie. Also the resourceful action scenes and the landscapes are very cool.
The movie has sort of practical philosophy without many pretenses full of optimism and life which is very appealing.

Of all the Star Wars episodes ( 3 yet to be seen) this one achieves an overall mood. Despite the wide variety of settings and worlds, there is a certain Je ne sais quoi about the whole film, in every scene. You really feel that space is vast, stronger than all the other Star Wars films. The good guys are helpless from the start, and there isn't really any contrived plot twist or fluke circumstance that saves them. The story is made believable by the variety of conflicting agendas between (and within) the empire, the bounty hunters, the rebels, and the director of cloud city.
The mild comedy relief by Yoda is welcomed. The banter between the robots, and Han & Leia, grows tiresome.
As a side point, this is a most aptly named film. The Empire Strikes Back' is basically the thesis statement of the story.
