This is a rare one for me. Typically romance is not my genre, but given the onslaught of light novels now becoming available, it seemed prudent to give different subjects a shot. Though romance isn't my usual taste, the problems with it are less about the notion of romance, but rather the execution. Most romance is poorly executed and it is so pervasive that it is often better to avoid it entirely when you're not a fan. So what makes this book stand out so much as compared to the over whelming among of romance out there? Pacing and chemistry. The first thing that romance typically does that makes me hate it is treat the subject like a quick fix drug you take but only for a short high. The romance focuses on this will they or won't they chemistry that is supposed to excite you, the reader, in putting yourself in that position. It's a fantasy that allows you to re-imagined that short time of your life when a love is just starting, a fledgling relationship. To accomplish this, many writers will forgo the portion of character development, depth and relationship development and instead try to force characters into situations and places that make them excite. The walking out of a bathroom to run into romantic partner, the extreme use of physical description of feeling such as butter flies in the stomach. The pretending that other people in the world simply do not exist. All of this cliche is so rampant in romance it's kind of dizzying.Adachi and Shimamura doesn't really do that, in fact the first book only features attraction and not even heavy attraction at that. The book is all about building a foundation for a romance that is probably going to follow in later volumes, but who knows how many. This slow burn delayed gratification is what a lot of pulp romance is missing. Sure there are plenty of romance writers who get this part right and to some degree this is a question of taste as some readers really do just want a quick snack, rather than something deeper. Will this book be right for you? It is simply a question of asking yourself what you're in it for. A slower burn than maybe yes. That said there are still some that take their time even more than this one does and for those readers who prefer that may yet still look elsewhere.
