「釣耕園」熊本県熊本市・”Chouko en” Kumamoto pref.

肥後細川家三代・五代藩主であった細川綱利（つなとし）の「お茶屋」のひとつで、熊本藩の家老で漢詩人の米田波門が、その景観を「釣月耕雲」と詩に詠じたことから、「釣耕園」と名づけられたそうです。いつの頃かは不明ですがこの釣耕園は家臣の続弾右衛門に与えられ、現在も続家が所有管理しているそうです。庭園の奥には滝石組や雪見灯籠や石橋など日本庭園の景物はそろっています。また池のなかに点々と置かれた沢飛び石の上に立ち池の中ほどから建物を振り返った景色がこの庭園のベストビュー。また、この庭に独特の雰囲気を生んでいるのは中国趣味で、庭内には中国風の仏像や羅漢像が置かれています。また明治〜昭和初期の時代につくられたとおぼしき石造のアーチ型の門や、透かし模様の陶器がはめ込まれた塀にも中国趣味がはっきりあらわれています。惜しいことに庭園は荒れており樹木が成長しすぎてうっそうとして昼なお暗く、また庭園とともに貴重な近代和風住宅の玄関上にかけられていた「松風」の扁額は落ちてしまい枯れ葉に埋もれかけていました。どうみても建築の保存状態もかんばしくありません。このように庭園は退廃的な廃園の美学に埋没しています。そのなかで唯一の救いは、園内をよどみなく流れる湧水の小川です。この流れは平成の名水百選「金峰山湧水群」のひとつで、細川藩のお茶屋はこのように湧水が豊富な場所につくられるのが伝統となっています。現在の荒れた釣耕園にたたずむとき、その湧水の澄んだ流れだけが健全な印象を庭にもたらしています。この釣耕園のように古く広大な屋敷と庭園を維持管理することは御苦労も多いと思いますが、同じ熊本市内のマリエール神水苑のように資本力のあるレストランなどに貸し出し、建物を傷つけない範囲のリノベーションをおこない荒れた庭園も蘇らせて再有効活用することも選択肢のひとつかもしれません。

In the middle of the Edo period, it was one of the "teahouses (villas)" created by Tsunatoshi Hosokawa, the third and fifth feudal lord of the Higo Hosokawa clan, and was given to his vassal, Tsuduki . The garden has all the scenery of the Japanese garden such as Takiishigumi, Yukimi Lantern and Ishibashi. The best view of this garden is the view of the mansion, standing on the stepping stones scattered in the pond. It is a Chinoiserie that creates a unique atmosphere in this garden, and Chinese-style Buddha statues and Rakan statues are placed in the garden. The stone arched gates and walls also clearly show the Chinese taste. Unfortunately, the gardens are rough and dark with overgrown trees in the daytime, and the architecture is not well preserved.

The garden is full of abandoned flair, giving the impression that everything is buried in a decaying, decadent aesthetic. The only salvation among them is the stream of spring water that flows through the garden. This flow is one of the "springs of Mt. Kinpo", and it is a tradition that teahouses of the Hosokawa clan are built in places with abundant springs. When you stand in the current rough fishing garden, only the clear stream of the spring is healthy. It seems that this fishing garden is still managed by the Tsuduki family, and I think it is difficult to maintain such an old and vast mansion and garden, but the management is insufficient at present. That is clear. There is also a successful example of Marielle Shinsuien in the same city of Kumamoto, and it is better to rent it to a restaurant etc. and renovate it to the extent that it does not damage the building and revive the rough garden to find a way to effectively utilize the fishing garden. I thought it would be good.
