With a few months left in his sentence, thirty-eight year old convict Randall Patrick McMurphy - "Mac" - serving time for several assaults and statutory rape, has just been transferred from a labor camp associated with Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton to a psychiatric hospital. Mac has been able to use acting "crazy" - having a belligerent and smart-alecky attitude and anti-authoritarian behavior - to his benefit in not having to do any work. He is at the hospital as the authorities at Pendleton want him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to prove he is not crazy, believing this is all an act to get out of work. He believes this stint will get him out of any more work while he serves out the remainder of his sentence. He is placed in a ward with a group of men who have differing degrees of lucidity and control of their mental faculties. He continues to behave in the same manner as always to get what he wants, using the other patients either as accessories or things for his own amusement. He adds to his list of goals to do anything to annoy the ward's tyrannical head nurse, Miss Mildred Ratched, whose seeming want is to break the spirit of any of the men in her care. In his battle with Nurse Ratched, Mac eventually tries to help the men get a voice of their own while in the hospital, and for some for their eventual return to the outside world / directed by - Milos Forman

Michael Douglas should be very proud of this early accomplishment. The characters we meet throughout the film are very memorable, some likable, some psychotic. The film has a such a realistic style, you could be fooled into thinking you are watching a documentary. This is one of the most unforgettable films of the past years- don't miss it! For anyone who has not had the opportunity to view this film please do not hesitate. I have given this film a perfect "10" rating and I will not do that often. Very few movies deserve that rating but this one is definitely one of them.

This movie is 8th in the world according to IMDb and I'm not surprised. I saw the movie first a few years ago with my dad and enjoyed it, but not I'm a bit older, I understand the movie is spectacular! Nicholson is amazing in it, his best movie and he has done very well in other movies including bucket list but this was amazing. All the characters you are supposed to love, you simply love and Nicholson's character 'Mc Murphy' and Chief have amazing chemistry and have a very special bond. But the best part of the movie, is when they pretend they are watching the world series and have a great time. A perfect movie and a must see for anyone.

I watched "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" many years ago but only just re-watched it today on DVD. I've now seen it twice today, once with standard soundtrack and again with the soundtrack consisting of commentary from the director and producers. Frankly I'm disgusted at myself for not seeing this movie more often - this is one of the best pictures of all time, in my opinion. Nicholson has never made a better picture (though I do think that he's made a good living playing McMurphy ever since) and Fletcher epitomises the kind of eveil that goes un-noticed because it's there 'for your own good. The film is ultimately bleak, though, in its statement that spontenaity and personaity will be punished by destruction - either physical (like Bobby) or by forced conformance (like McMurphy) surely has taken this from his experience behind the Iron Curtain.
9/10 - not 10 because of its hopelessness.
