Ive never been so mad at a movie ever, from the beginning I have built hope for dani she has lost her family, and was trying to find peace with her relationship, when she arrived there I realized that she wasnt brushing off the odd like the rest of the group and assumed that she somehow would escape as she was studying to becoming a psychologist you would think she is in the right headspace to understand misbehavior and maybe play along but finding a way out right.

This movie made me so uncomfortable so many times. At one point I started to notice some discomfort in my face and realized I hadn't blinked in at least five minutes. My eyes stuck wide open, glued to the humanistic horror unfolding onscreen.
All I really want to say is that Ari Aster belongs in a psych ward. He should still be allowed to make movies. And I will watch all of them. I just don't want the guy who wrote and directed this movie to be able to roam free in society. It's just not a good idea.

. I love this movie and that there is so much discussion about it. Also, I love it that ALL the characters are morally ambiguous. Hårgas are a cult and and they wanted Dani to be May Queen. They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up. This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in. This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I'm amazed that people consider Dani, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse? It's a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don't see that. I don't think what Christian does can be called gaslighting - but he's still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there. Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That's her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices. In that moment, she's liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No. She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices! Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it's partly because she's gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel. She has lost everything and she's made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she's also being manipulated into. And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She's taken part into their murders. The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She's so overwhelmed with the flowers it's hard for her to move. They welcome her home, because as the only blond female of the group, she's the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well. And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it's even more psychological, doesn't require supernatural aspects- and it's core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful. NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There's a chance she will adjust but that is left open. I think it's a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.

But Drinker, you grandiose inebriated demi-god, your opinion on that movie is so more subjective than what you usually give us ! Forget about the supposed themes and moronic attitude of the youngsters. I thought some of the shots of this movie, while surely appearing a bit pretentious, were still A grade psychological and gory horror scenes : that beginning scene with the suicide and the trauma afterwards, that end scene where christian wins the cake in worst fucking death ever... I thought they were gripping ! I think that Ari Aster guy is uniquely gifted in portraying emotional trauma in its actors, in a very refreshing way when you compare to the rest of the horror genre. You can argue that movie is flawed, but WORST movie ? You are usually so good at finding some good even in the worst PoS flicks you destroy brilliantly. This movie is nowhere as bad (in fact I like it) and stupid as let's say star wars or the predator 2019. Are you sure you've had enough alcohol today.

Been waiting for this for a while now and it was worth every second. It was brilliant! As a Swede that celebrated midsommar many times I thought that this movie would make us look even more stuiped, we already dance around a pole like frogs once a year. But this movie was intelligent, brutal and everything I expected after Ari's last masterpiece. Even if there were parts when I felt a little bored I would'nt take any scenes away because they needed to be there to make the movie whole.
Can't wait to see it again. I literally had to walk out halfway cuz I almost passed out.

I feel that midsommar is deeply horrifying, to me it represents the dangers of looking at another culture or subculture uncritically to the point where you assimilate into a community that contradicts your own values, just because it seems idyllic on the surface. Not to say that you shouldn't respect and value other cultures, but ompletely romanticising and idealising another country without understanding it is not respectful in my opinion. It's also about falling prey to toxic people who take advantage of your vulnerable mental state, the film's characters were charmed by a performative friendliness I've experienced for myself.

When I saw that scene of the women crying with Dani, my immediate thought was oh this is love bombing, ya know, a classic tactic of cults. Those three words sum up this movie perfectly. Midsommer is my first watch from Ari Aster. (Hereditary I will watch soon and will review later this week. But this movie looks so BEAUTIFUL. And the performances are GREAT. Especially the main character played by Florence. She maybe deserves an Academy Award nomination for this movie. That's how good she is. Like I said this movie is disgusting and hard to watch at times. A lot of "what is going on" scenes and I respect Ari for not holding back. As far as issues. It's a little lengthy. I love long movies but I feel this movie suffered at times and could've easily been chopped down to exactly 2hrs and it would've been fine. Last but not least the way this movie looks. Is AMAZING. This again deserves a Oscar nomination for best Cinematography. It's just gorgeous. I recommend this movie for anyone who really wants to see a weird bizzare movie that is still very good.
