After months of anticipation, Christopher Nolan's TENET is finally in theaters. But after walking out, I'm not really sure what it was trying to be. It was a mixture of disappointment and confusion.
TENET has great set pieces. The action and in-camera stuff is top-tier Christopher Nolan. This movie will be remembered for that. The acting is also top-tier. Robert Pattinson and John David Washington give great performances. The story has unique elements that are far more original than 99% of movies being released today.
Unfortunately, this movie has a lot of bad too. For one, the plot is WAY to confusing to be understood by the average viewer. For the first hour, my brain was using 100% of its capacity to follow the story. Characters go to many places, do many things, and talk to many people with little explanation of why or how. Nolan did this in Memento, but it made sense later in that movie. I kept telling myself, Just enjoy the movie. It will make sense later, but it never did. That was partly because I couldn't understand a word characters were saying in an IMAX surround sound theater. I plan on buying this on Blu-ray, and turning on closed captions. Maybe then it will make sense, but as of now, it did not.
What really broke my experience was the time twist in the 2nd act. I was already using 100% but I was pushed to 110. At that point, I gave up trying to analyze it. There were some really good ideas done with the time twist, but they fell flat when trying to figure out what was going on. The final act was messy because we knew what would happen if the characters didn't succeed, but we didn't care for them succeeding.
TENET has very little character development. Kat is the most developed character, but our two leading men don't have traits. The movie doesn't slow down to explain the plot or the characters, but the dialogue mixing is part of the issue.
In conclusion, TENET gave me a Nolan movie, but not the Nolan movie I wanted. I had very little character development, an unnecessarily confusing plot, and awe-inspiring set pieces that will hopefully make more sense with closed captions. I recommend seeing this movie for the spectacle, but don't expect another Inception.
