The New Mutants is the newest and final instalment in the Fox-X-Men franchise, written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) and starring Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton and more.
Approaching this movie, I had mixed emotions. The trailers after the Disney/Fox takeover looked intriguing, yet persistent delays worried me. Having seen it, I feel this way, it's a mixed bag.
To start, positives. The central idea behind this movie is interesting. A small scale story, small cast, one location and one shared goal. It's contained and stays that way throughout. The characters are unique enough to lay some solid groundwork, and all have their moments at front stage.
Other positives include the cinematography, which at times gave the film an eerie mood that, presumably intended, symmetrical exterior shots of the facility and its surroundings had a horror genre feel. Also, some of the performances were solid, notably Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton, mostly) but I am yet to see proper range from him as an actor, perhaps that's my fault for having not seen him in enough different roles. Even Henry Zaga as Roberto was surprisingly good, though his character had less creative attention paid towards him, unfortunately. The other cast members though were not as good with their performances.
The visual effects, for the most part, were also good, as well as the scenes where characters use their powers, unfortunately, these are few and far between. I would've loved to see more of Heaton in action as Sam, but the film tended to stay away from big action until the climax. This admittedly was likely a creative decision in an attempt to make this film different from a usual comic-book movie, which it certainly is, to its credit. This though is happening more and more often, with films like Joker venturing into other genres with deeper themes and darker issues.
Finally, the film was short, at a runtime of just 94 minutes, which was good as I was rarely bored in the film, and did not feel it would've benefitted from being longer or shorter.
That sadly is about it for positives, as this film has a lot of issues.
First off is the performances of the cast members I didn't mention before. In the scenes that seemed like reshoots, the cast was better, but in the first half of the film, there was some awful line delivery and dialogue from some of the actors, where I was cringing in my seat thinking my friends won't like me anymore after asking them to see this movie with me. Notably early scenes in the living room and one where Blu Hunt's character is knelt in the facilities' grounds. Also, Heaton's character had scenes where he would completely abandon his Southern accent, another issue that came with the rumoured reshoots I assume.
Alice Braga as the film's main antagonist was ok, not a memorable performance but wasn't bad. She never seemed truly threatening to the heroes and was not much more than a middle man for the overall plan.
A story issue that I'll keep brief is that the characters act like they barely know each other in some scenes, simply to allow for some expositional backstory, whereas in others they are messing around like they've known each other for years. Another story issue I had was that it didn't have many surprises to throw at you, and I had figured out the big reveal early on.
Another negative is unavoidable, and that's how it fits in with the X-Men timeline. I am fine with it being standalone, taking place as a side story within the continuity, but it was clearly made with intentions to build upon this group of characters as the future of the franchise. As it was filmed in 2016, the thought of the series ending over a takeover was not in the picture, but with the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney, the movie is now redundant within a larger story arc. And when a film is banking on sequels to do its dirty work, it's never going to be great, proven spectacularly by Disney's Artemis Fowl adaptation earlier this year.
This film is also not as gripping, nor as scary as I'd hoped. There were points towards the middle of the film where some tension was built, as the characters essentially took turns to get scared one after another. It: Chapter 2 had a similar issue, but this time was thankfully not as formulaic. Other than those scenes though, it didn't commit enough to being the horror-thriller we were promised in the trailers, just a few tense scenes and some tacked-on subplots that lead nowhere, until the final act rolls around.
Speaking of the final act, I think this is where the movie was seriously tinkered with in post-production, and potentially by Disney after the acquisition. Cast members were noticeably older, and it felt so surreal compared to the rest of the film.
The ending was strange, to say the least without spoiling, as I was sat in the cinema thinking what ability does the protagonist have meaning she can do THAT? Again, probably me missing an important detail at some other point, but an unsatisfying conclusion either way.
Overall, The New Mutants was harmed by its production issues that overshadowed what the film might've been. The idea had great potential. If it were to be revisited then I would be there to see it. It is not the worst of the X-Men franchise, but far from the best. Its short runtime and high pace were the most redeeming factors, but the rest of the positives, such as some intriguing characters, just ended up underdeveloped and shallow. It seems as if this is the end of the line for the New Mutants, and as much as I would watch any sequels were they to happen, I'm not desperate to see more of these characters by any stretch of the imagination.

I will give The New Mutants a 5 out of 10 for entertainment, and a C+ for filmmaking in terms of direction, cinematography and production value.
