Seriously, I can see the pitch meeting for this: It's got the fight scenario draw of the Rocky films along with the sentimental impact of Over the Top, but with robots! Great big robots that fight like the Rock'em Sock'em Robots you loved as kids! Look how popular the Transformers are now! And we'll get Hugh Jackman to play Sylvester Stallone and Evangeline Lilly to be Talia Shire. It's a sure fire hit!
Luckily the film has some things going for it: The CGI is good; the fight scenes are pretty exciting (considering it's robots) the actor playing Jackman's son is not overly cute or annoying, he actually comes across as charming sometimes; and Jackman seems to be having a good time as the lead. Lilly is completely wasted in a pointless supporting role.
Such a shame that the script didn't have a single original thought given to it.
