"Real Steel" 2011) is a considerably above average example of what I call the "CGI laser light show" movie genre, much better than most (insert "Sucker Punch" here. Think "The Champ" 1931) with elements from "Transformers" 2004. Rocky" the 1976 original) and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" 1991.
At its core it is another redemption tale as aging boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) gets a chance to be a father to the now eleven year-old son he abandoned at birth (Max Kenton - nicely played by Dakota Goyo. Charlie is informed that his ex-wife has died and he leaps at the chance to cut a deal with his wealthy sister-in-law to give her custody of the boy. But through a series of somewhat contrived events the jaded Charlie ends up with Max for the first summer.
The secret to this type of fairy tale lies in how well they connect with viewers; if the movie can get viewers to strongly identify with the character (in this case Max) as he gets a huge rush from suddenly becoming part of the robot-fighting world, the viewer will get hooked. Then the challenge is to keep them hooked for as long as possible. "Real Steel" hooks you and provides this vicarious rush well past the midway point, in large part because of the twist of having Max bond with the robot as a surrogate father, much in the spirit of "Terminator 2" but also nicely integrated with the ongoing dynamic of the old robot being Charlie's twin or at least the piece that completes him. But eventually the wheels fall off, or in this case get knocked off by a "Rocky" scripted overreach. The illusion bursts and most viewers crash back to reality because it takes too much mental energy to suspend disbelief when the team breaks into the glitzy celebrity world. From that point on it is just overwrought melodrama, with the inspirational "redemption on steroids" theme aggressively shoved down each viewer's throat.
Of course this surfeit of cliché might have been palatable but for Kevin Durand's overplayed heavy. Like a series of cardiac arrests the heart of the movie first begins beating irregularly during his debt collection sequence, is then severely damaged by his lame homeboys routine, and finally succumbs from his sequence at the conclusion of the first round of the climatic fight. These would make great deleted scenes for the DVD release but should have been mercifully trimmed from the already too-long film.
The one positive of the glitzy sequences was Olga Fonda's "Farra Lemkova" character, an amped up to super-hotness play on WWE's Stephanie McMahon. She provided the film's most interesting images, a kind of an embodiment of slick temptation. Can't say the same for Karl Yune's Asian robot designer who essentially was tasked with the Apollo Creed role. Part of Rocky's success lay in Creed's newly acknowledged respect for Rocky at the conclusion of the film, this allowed the ending to transcend its cliché elements because it nicely blunted the obvious good vs evil dynamic. Yune was not allowed to play his character this way and "Real Steel" loses considerable depth, dimension, and IQ points because of it.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
