There is no denying the amazing sets, costuming and special effects. In this it is unique and brilliant. And that's where the brilliance stops.
Take one of the most original and creative novels in all of science fiction and turn it into some of the worst space opera ever written, and we have Dune. The lines are corny, the directing inexcusably poor, and the acting something out of a school play, but without the charm.
Add to that train wreck a second train, a slaughtered cattle hauler and a huge septic tank and we have a movie full of needless and useless sickening scenes, absurd departures from the novel, and amateurish presentation. The Baron is a pain to even look at. There is no excuse in "he's meant to be" the director replaced proper character portrayal with shock schlock. There are so many terrible character portrayals it's difficult to pick the worst.
We start with opening narrative lines of "Oh yes, I forgot to tell you. and it goes downhill from there. The first spoken words of Chani ( I would not have let you harm my people. fully-mouthed. every. syllable) scream forced dialog and bad directorial micro-managing. The presentation of Brad Dourif's Mentat character Piter is hands down one of the worst I've ever seen. so extremely bad I can't tell whether it was the actor, director or a combo of both who were responsible for his ridiculous hand gestures and overly punctual speech. We've seen B-class fan films with better character presentation.
To list the numerous flaws in this movie would require a novel of its own. While it is visually stunning, the writers and directors should be banned from the industry for slaughtering one of the greatest sci fi novels of all time. There comes a point when murder of a book might be considered criminal activity. If such should ever occur, this film would be prime evidence.
