「旧島津氏玉里邸庭園」鹿児島市・“Kyu Shimadusi Tamazatotei Teien”Kagoshima pref

玉里邸は薩摩藩第二十七代当主薩摩斉興により１８３５年に造営された島津家の別邸。当初は同じく島津家別邸である仙巌園にも劣らない規模を誇ったが、西南戦争など幾多の戦火で焼失。現在見られる茶室などの建築は1879年島津久光公による再建で、かろうじて第二次大戦の戦火で焼け残ったもの。本来この玉里邸は「上御庭」と「下御庭」の2つのエリアからなり、現在公開されている庭は「下御庭」にあたる。本来の主庭お豪華な御殿があったのは「上御庭」であり、現在では隣接する高台の上にある鹿児島女子高校となってしまっている（庭園は一部が現存、時折公開）。本来なら「下御庭」は茶室を中心とする露地であるが、大変開放的な池泉回遊式の立派な庭園となっている。それは江戸後期以降の島津家で煎茶道が嗜まれていたことを物語っている。池のほとりの巨石が目を引くが、これは仙巌園付近の海岸にあった石を５３個に切り分けてここまで運んで再構築したもので、岡山・後楽園の巨石と同じで大名庭園に多い趣向。池には朝鮮出兵の際に持ち帰ったと伝わる朝鮮石塔を浮かべ、他にも庭内には大陸伝来と思しき珍しい石塔等などが据えられているが、これらは大陸との貿易に密接に関与した島津氏らしい設え。特に朝鮮石塔は薩摩藩を中心に九州の庭でしか見られない特異なもので、この玉里別邸の石塔が最も古い作例ではないかとれる。また、池に向かってつきだした礼拝石は株に医師の支柱を持つ構築的作例であり珍しい。他にも中島に水神を象徴する石造の珠が据えられおり竜神や水神に対する信仰を思わ興味深い。その一方で庭内には幕末における薩摩藩の先進的近代化を物語る水道施設の遺構も残り新旧が共存している。現在庭の入り口となっている黒門は島津久光の葬儀（国葬）の際に出棺のために明治２０年に建築されたもの。門の入口正面に魔除けの石垣が立ちはだかり「石敢當（いしがんどう)」の三文字が彫られている、これもいかにも薩摩らしい大陸の様式。

Tamazato second residence was built by Shimadu Nariaki in 1835. Mr. Shimadu was a high class samurai who dominated Kagoshima until the Meiji era and was a daimyo. Nariaki was 27th. Tamazato second residence was very expansive at the time it was built, most of the site now is Kagoshima girls' high school. Only the tea house garden for the tea ceremony was left. Shimadu's garden features to put foreign elements. The stone pagoda of Korea is also placed as one of the main elements in this garden pond. Unlike Japanese stone pagoda it is decorative. The big stone near the pond is 3 meters high. It was cut into 53 parts from the far coast, brought here and was united again. It is a wonderful element unique to the Daimyo garden. A similar stone is also in Korakuen garden in Okayama. This garden is open to the public free of charge. And parking is free. There are few tourists from foreign countries. The garden is always silent. When I visited, grass leaves floated in the pond shortly after weeding. Do not misunderstand the image as a "dirty pond", it is always a beautiful water surface.
