It's a cool idea and I'm sure the Japanese have already done it. Unfortunately this is a weird hybrid between a kids film and an adult film. Frankly the stuff in the 'robot underground' is too dark and gruesome for young kids, whilst much of the boxing is too tame for older kids. The plot is basically a reheated version of THE CHAMP as a former human boxer cum robot boxer pilot has to look after his annoying, brattish son. Inevitably they bond over the sport and take their plucky 'bot which can learn to the championships, where in the course of what seem like weeks they go from amateur to fighting the world champion (inevitably sleek, evil and Asian/Russian. Daddy learns to accept responsibility, whilst the kid learns how to beat up robots real good; it's a heartwarming story. No prizes for guessing that they end up as a Real American Family (tm) by the end. The fights are sub-ROCKY and it's never that clear how they actually win the climactic match, beyond the fact the writers want them too. If you really have to watch a flick with the kids then this isn't too bad, but it's pretty generic otherwise.
