This was a great film with a great cast, but as Cliff Gorman became more prominent, it was hard NOT to think of him as Emory ! LOL. The boys in the band 2020. Disclaimer! I have not seen the original nor the broadway play, this is my first introduction to the franchise. This isn't really important to my review, but I thought I'd just let you know
I really enjoyed this movie, but I had some problems with it. I think that the acting was fantastic and the characters were great too. Most of them had a fleshed out storyline with a good backstory to it. I also think the intense scenes came off that way and the awkward scenes did too, which was the point.
However, I felt that it was very long. I just feel like one hour was spent introducing the whole story and building up while the second hour was what we all came here for. That was my major problem with it but I also found a lot of the scenes (especially in the first half) really boring. I understand we need to understand the characters and the story but whats the point in adding a bunch of boring scenes that have no impact on the story?
Again, I thought that it was a good movie, but it had some kinks to work out here and there. If you are bored then you should watch it, but just beware you might (just might depending on what kind of things you like) be bored.

Was lucky enough to see this production on Broadway and it was phenomenal. So glad they got the entire Broadway cast for the film adaptation. This movie is wonderful! Thank you Netflix. 'The Boys in the Band' is arguably one of the most important Gay American Plays of the 20th century and your analysis of it is absolutely spot on. I saw the movie and read the play prior to coming out in the 1980s when gay and lesbian characters on television were ones of mockery and derision. At the time, it terrified me because I had such a limited exposure to LGBT people and thought that was what the future held. I wonder how that same experience would be in today's world where LGBT actors and characters are embraced, almost celebrated and questioning teens have access to positive role models and more support in general. If you happen to watch 'The Celluloid Closet' and Making the Band, viewers will get a better understanding of the play/movie and should be able to see beyond their knee-jerk reaction to stereotypes and realize it's about MUCH more than a bunch of queens getting catty and hating themselves. It's not offensive at all. Actually, I think the play/movie show a much more diverse array of gay men than the singular flaming hairdresser character I saw over and over as a kid. Great job.

I'm a huge fan of films that take place in one setting and feature a killer script. "The Boys In The Band" is that film. There's no chance you'll want to steer away because you'll want to know what happens next. Even though set in the 60s, everything is still relevant today. It's an excellent look at gay men and the struggles they face daily. I really loved this film.

And where does the theory that Donald's psychotherapy is an attempt to cure his homosexuality come from? No where in the text or performance is this suggested. The problem with this analysis of the film (and by inference, the play) is that it is based on the life experiences of whom I assume is a heterosexual woman. It is off-base on almost every point. 'Cowboy' Tex was as dumb as dogs' balls, but what a 'present. The sterotypes presented here might be simplications, as the narrator suggests, but Christ, there's more than an element of truth to them! They're all middle-class privileged New Yorkers. Emory is utterly excruciating. That revelation about the thwarted crush has pathos, but so what? I love the diverse range of types here. Michael is a shit, undoubtedly. Alcohol would really bring out the bitchiness in these queens- not far from real life there! We all know how so many queens abuse substances of one type or another! You have most of the types represented here, it's little more than a good case for suicide if you ask me. As for Brokeback Mountain, that's nothing more than a conventional case for the closet, showing 2 inexpressive men who endure unsuccessful marriages to conceal their truth (Jack clearly marries money and in this sense takes a female role. That film is little more than a cautionary tale with some nice mountain scenery.
