- story - Daniel and his mother move from New Jersey to California. She has a wonderful new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that a dark haired Italian boy with a Jersey accent doesn't fit into the blond surfer crowd. Daniel manages to talk his way out of some fights, but he is finally cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi, the elderly gardener leaps into the fray and save him by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon find out the real motivator behind the boys' violent attitude in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament some months off. When his training begins, Daniel doesn't understand what he is being shown. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate

Johnny's triple kick at :56 amazed me so much when I saw this movie at the age of 10 and my adrenaline was flowing so hard that I turned to my mom after the movie and said Someday I'm going to be a black belt I achieved my goal. I'm a second degree and I teach the children's program. I cannot imagine my life without martial arts in it and wonder what would have became of me if I had not seen this movie. Here's why: Immediately before this, Daniel and Kumiko get a glimpse of how advanced Chozen's karate skills are when they peer into the window of his dojo. This, combined with Chozen's already hostile attitude towards Daniel, makes him extremely threatening. They walk the streets talking in a lighthearted manner, but then they enter the bar at Daniel's bidding where everything gets loud and energetic, with high tempo music, gambling, and the camaraderie of off-duty US soldiers smoking and drinking. Daniel is called out for his rash judgment and challenged to break the ice, only for Chozen to immediately enter the scene and heighten the tension dramatically by demanding that Daniel comply. Kumiko appears to abandon Daniel, who is outnumbered and overpowered by the bar patrons, now spearheaded by Chozen. It appears that Daniel is destined for either public humiliation through failure or a beating by Chozen for backing down after being so brash. But Miyagi enters, and everyone expects Miyagi to get Daniel out of this situation he cornered himself into, but Miyagi betrays Daniel's expectations by forcing him to follow through with it. Daniel has never done anything like this before, so it really was a shock, both to himself and vicariously to the audience. Miyagi throws down a large bet, and just when it appears Chozen can't match his wager, Sato enters like a (literal) boss to back him. The music at this point matches the tension that had been rising since the scene began, and there is now no way out. Miyagi reminds Daniel of the simple power of focusing his mind and energy, and Daniel finally acquiesces to the challenge that he started in the first place. When Sato sees Daniel performing the breathing technique, he recalls his own training by Miyagi's father and gains a certain respect for Daniel, who is carrying on the tradition of Miyagi-do in a way that Chozen, through his lack of honor, does not. After Daniel breaks the ice, Chozen, like a sore loser, is reeling from his loss and doesn't want to concede his money, but Sato, who is all about honor, reprimands him for embarrassing him, and remains silent after Miyagi boastfully thanks him for his money. Miyagi's wisdom is shown once again, for nobody thought Daniel could do it except him, and he walks out with all the money, his foe humbled, and his student's confidence through the roof.
