Real Steel is a heart felt movie that feels like the original Rocky. Note I said Feels like. The premise is simple. Charlie Kenton is a former contender for the Heavyweight Championship his one moment of glory is when he almost took down the number 2 contender for the Title. Boxing loses popularity even UFC and MMA style events lose popularity and becomes outlawed leaving former fighters promoters and managers to invest in fighting robots. Charlie invests in one bad robot after another and gets involved in one bad fight after another. He's in debt and he's barely hanging on. Then his Ex Wife dies and a son he barely remembers comes back in his life. Charlie hands custody over to the boy's only other living relatives his aunt and uncle who ask Charlie to look after the boy for the summer while they go on a trip. Charlie and Max barely get along as Charlie introduces Max to the world of robot boxing. Charlie loses his last robot and as he scavenges for parts in a robot graveyard they discover ATOM a generation 2 sparring robot who Max and Charlie convert to a fighting robot. The rest of the movie does become cliché. ATOM is the little robot who can and he does take them right up to the Heavyweight Championship. Father and son bond. Then something comes along that threatens that Bond and they have one last fight that makes that bond stronger. Hugh Jackman gives one of the best performances he ever has. He comes across as unlikeable charming and he's a conman who's willing to sell his son to his uncle for 50 thousand dollars. He's so selfish and willing to wheel and deal that you wonder if he has a heart of steel. eventually you find that Charlie has a heart and after a lifetime of being hurt and beaten down he's built a shell of steel around himself.
It's a shame Jackman was not nominated for any awards because he creates a character so different from any other role he's played. Don't pass this movie by take a chance watch it and be surprised because the movie actually is just as good as Rocky it's got that same vibe and it's got some great action.
