Mr. Hirayama Garden" Kagoshima Pref.

Scenic spot

"Shibushi Fumoto Gardens (1) Mr. Hirayama Garden" / Shibushi City, Kagoshima Prefecture

Scenic spot

☆ Historical value, now ruins, can be restored.

During the Edo period, Daimyo · Shimadu of the Kagoshima Satsuma clan had 110 areas where the samurai group called "Fumoto" was settled in various places within the clan. The most famous among those Fumoto is "Chiran". "Shibushi fumoto" also has some samurai residences and gardens are left.■

It is very sad that many samurai residences of Shibushi are ruined and the maintenance of the garden is poor. The speed of preservation restoration by Shibushi City was slow for me to seem to catch up with the collapse of cultural property. That's the information you need to know before you visit. Should you go for a tour? Judging yourself, look at the garden photos of Shibushi Fumoto I will introduce.

The preservation of the gardens of the samurai residences group of Shibushi fumoto has just begun. The ruined samurai residences and gardens will be restored little by little by the Cultural Property Division of the Shibushi City Hall. Currently, there are few gardens suitable for our sightseeing. But once they have been restored, we will be able to see the wonderful gardens. Let's look forward to that day.

"Mr. Hirayama garden" is a work in the early Edo period. Originally it was a temple garden. In the era of the Meiji period, the temple disappeared and Mr. Hirayama built a mansion in that place and took over the garden. Shibushi has many natural cliffs of welded tuff which volcanic ashes called Shiras cemented. Many gardens are made using the cliffs. "Mr. Hirayama garden" planted a rounded azalea on the rock which protruded from the cliff of the welded tuff and made it a garden. Only one stone lantern is the artificial element of this garden. The rocky layer protruding obliquely is powerfully creating a landscape that is composed of abstracts.

Incidentally, the window frame of the uninhabited house has been replaced by a silver aluminum sash, which markedly damages the landscape and the roof is collapsing inside. The house is about to collapse any longer. Maintenance for the garden also seemed poor.
