One flew over the cuckoo's nest publish date. As much as I love this movie, It caused me some anxiety at one point. About a year ago I was severely depressed and my parents checked me into the hospital because I was suicidal. I kept begging them to take me home because every movie portrays mental hospitals as scary, filthy, and full of weird people (Like in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest) and I was afraid I wouldn't feel safe there. I couldn't have been more wrong, because I got the help I needed and it really wasn't that bad. I also learned people in the mental health unit are some of the nicest, most sympathetic, and caring people I've ever met, even the wacky ones. Please don't be scared to ask for help, because you won't get better just sitting there. To be honest, I miss everyone I was there with because we all got along and could talk for hours. I still keep in contact with a guy who was like my best friend in there.

One flew over the cuckoo& 39;s nest nurse ratched. I experienced a real life Big Nurse Ratched type. She was head nurse in a children's convalescent home where I was a 12 year old patient. Her name is lost to me but I see her clearly. She was a tall, imposing, good looking, 30-ish redhead resembling a certain actress famous for a TV show bearing her name. I'll call her Big Red Nurse. She never missed a chance to pull my hair or otherwise paw me. It was so frequent I began hiding from her. Upon reflection, her touching was always with no witnesses. As an adult I learned about pedophilia and that pedophiles can be women attracted to boys which reminded me of this childhood experience. A striking memory was Big Red Nurse forcing me into the bathroom of my 4 person ward room and shutting the door behind us. Once in there, I waited for whatever torment was coming but she just stood and stared at me, excited and agitated. She said and did nothing for a few moments and then opened the door and left. No one saw or knew of this except Big Red Nurse and the other three children in that room. Nothing came of it and only as an adult did this behavior take on sexual implications. A related memory was of the oldest boy on the ward. He was perhaps 13 with a slight mustache. He had an isolated room by himself and his own TV set. TV was a luxury in 1951 and having TV at all was as odd as a private room. As head nurse, she must have made the decision to put him by himself. Her suspicious fixation on me raises questions about the pubescent teenager's treatment. So Nurse Ratched is a real type. The other kids and Big Red Nurse herself are lost in time so I can't cross check with others memories. People with custodial power over others, particularly over children, need strict vetting and oversight.

Louise deserved it. Her acting was so intense. It's so hard to get really hated... Wonderful performance.

Becuase of the brilliant interpretation of Kesey's novel and my personal favorite film starring my great uncle Will Sampson. It should be higher rated.
A stunning story which hits a wide range of emotions. The film really captures the different feelings we would all get if we had to visit one of those places. Very disturbing at times but also done very tastefully.
From the moment McMurphy (Nicholson) enters the ward it is clear the type of influence he is going to have on his fellow 'nuts. At first he seems to mock them but he quickly learns to love them and brings happiness and hope to their lives.
The entire cast give perfect performances. It's great to see actors like De Vito and Lloyd performing so brilliantly so early on in their careers. They've all really thought about their characters various traits and acted them out consistently. Brad Dourif (nominated for an Oscar) steals the show towards the end although Nicholson is more than worthy of the Oscar. I've always said The Shining was his best performance but this is easily on par, probably even better. His relationship with 'the chief' becomes a heartwarming part of the story.
Nurse Ratched's (Fletcher) authoritative presence always makes you root for the 'nuts. The way she treats the patients doesn't always seem fair and he role as the 'baddie' becomes clear when she asks to keep McMurphy on the ward.
This film swept the Oscars and rightly so. A stone cold classic.
