守の森であろう。 田舎で育った子どもたちには、その森で暗くなるまで遊んだことやお祭りで賑 わった思い出が残っている。 これは、福井県にある平泉寺の鎮守の森をスケッチしたものである。

If Japan has some sort of square, then that would be guardian forest in the Japanese shrine or temple. People brought up in a village would remember such forest where they play till the sunset and enjoy the local festival. This is the guardian forest of the Heisenji temple in Fukui Prefecture.
