Told through the non-chronolgical, non-reliable narrator trope; The Gentleman weaves and winds and twists and turns from an initial scene containing an unexpected execution* to imagined and suggested actions being interspliced with new revelations to create a tapestry of true(ish) events.
Hugh Grant is great and used as a vehicle to spout increasingly ridiculous radical - often racist - slurs in a way which is both sleazy and charming; all whilst being equally predatory and menacing as he taunts and jabs at Charlie Hunham's younger protagonist.
A couple of characters get a little lost in this world; but this appears to be an insistence of Ritchie indulging some of his new Hollywood friends rather than for plot necessity or sense. I suppose - if you dig deep enough - it could be argued there's an analogy in there somewhere of American businessman exploiting UK markets for their own gain.
On the whole though, the Gentleman is enjoyable enough. Some great set pieces (see South London council estate) are interspersed with genuinely gripping character moments and dialogue a la early Tarantino; with this often offset with black-hearted comedy side-plots and riffs.
On the flip side however, there are a couple of scenes in particular with some troubling attitudes and approach towards the use of sexual violence and assault as a means to disempower and subjugate. The beastiality scene is especially unsettling and the character who falls victim to this fate is not-nearly given the backstory, arc, actions or motivations to deserve such a fate. Equally, the attempted, near-rape of the only speaking female character in the film seems an unnecessary shift in tone and dynamic.
Aside from this, The Gentleman also seems to want to distance itself from it's contemporaries in the genre. Ritchie appears to make a concerted effort to ensure younger, aspirational characters are routinely humiliated, degraded and/or ultimately out-thought/fought. The title of the film even suggests his distain for the newer gangster; as reflected in scenes such as Charlie Hunham's confrontation with a gang in an alleyway. Colin Farrell's gang of "Toddlers" do get their moment in the sun as part of a "fight porn" video package and small victory over unamed goons to showcase their skills, but when push-comes-to-shove, even they are given bit-part odd-jobs in service of Matthew McConaughey's Mickey.
Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable film overall and a good addition to the Guy Ritchie canon. It has more to say -in present terms, anyway - than Lock, Stock or Snatch, but it's still probably 10-15 years behind where it needs to be.
