Become a hairdresser at home: the steps

2021.04.23 09:17

You don't dream of opening your hairdressing salon but launching yourself as a hairdresser at home and creating a barber shop business plan. You are attracted by the prospects of this growing sector and the simplicity of management (no premises to maintain, etc.). But many questions remain unanswered before taking the plunge. Don't panic, and you are not the only one in this situation. Here is a list of the most often asked questions: do you need a degree and/or need permission to practice this trade? It depends on whether you choose to make it creative or comply with regulations. How can you make yourself known while you're on the market? This guide teaches you how to set yourself up as a home stylist.

BECOMING A HAIRDRESSER AT HOME: OBTAINING A DIPLOMA

to become a hairstylist, you must have 3 years of salon management or entrepreneurial experience in the United States or hold a place in the American market:

• Professional hairdressing certificate;

• Or a hairdressing master's certificate;

Or a diploma registered in the national certification directory in a field directly related to that of hairdressing.

The only exception is that you will not have to provide proof of a diploma if you carry out your activity on an ancillary basis in a town of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants and you only hairstyle for men.

DO I NEED THE AUTHORIZATION TO BE A HAIRDRESSER AT HOME?

By becoming a hairdresser at home, you will go to your clients, to their places of work or vacation, to medical or retirement homes… No hairdressing equipment will be installed there, so you will have to travel with yours. And to be authorized, you must first apply for a traveling artisan card. You can only be exempted from this if you carry out your activity in the municipality where your company's head office is located.

You will need to obtain this traveling craftsman card from the Chamber of Trades and Crafts, which will issue it to you on average within one month. Don't want to wait? You can request a provisional certificate to get started right away.

WHICH LEGAL STRUCTURE TO CHOOSE?

As a home hairdresser, you have two options: start your own business or become an employee (SASU, EURL). One benefit of the first choice is that it's quick to make; the second choice is safer.

Self-employed

Many entrepreneurs launch their self-employed hairdressers, won over by the flexibility of the plan. A simple auto- enterprise declaration is enough, and then you will benefit from simplified management. The accounting is lightened (you only need to keep a chronological register of receipts and expenses), you pay social charges according to the turnover you achieve, you can opt for the withholding tax and thus pay at the same time your income tax. Note that you do not charge VAT; this is called the VAT exemption.

Very flexible, this regime nevertheless has a major drawback: the turnover and VAT thresholds. Indeed, you must not exceed $ 70,000 per year in turnover (turnover), under penalty of switching to the sole proprietorship scheme, and beyond $ 35,200 in turnover, you will be liable VAT. However, a microenterprise can be a good choice if you start as a secondary activity for additional income.

You will also not be able to deduct your expenses, which can be significant (purchase of products, travel expenses, etc.).

Finally, you will be responsible for your patrimony for the debts you contract within your profession's framework. However, you can write a declaration of exemption from seizure to protect part of your property. Since the Macron law of 2016, your main residence is elusive by law.

The trading company

Another option to become a hairdresser is a commercial company, especially one-person companies (you do not need to create it in the company of another partner). For example, you can choose the Single Member Limited Liability Company (EURL) or the Single Member Simplified Joint Stock Company (SASU).

One of the company's advantages is that it acts as a screen between your assets and your possible creditors. Your professional and personal assets are separate. If you contract business debts, your creditors will not be able to pay off your assets.

Another asset of the commercial company to become a hairdresser, not the ceiling of turnover. Your activity is therefore not limited. No risk to have if you plan to make a significant turnover.

On the other hand, you will have to carry out more steps than to create a microenterprise. You will need to fill out the M0 form to set up a business, write the latter statutes, publish a legal notice in a competent newspaper, etc.

THE STEPS TO TAKE TO INSTALL A HAIRDRESSER AT HOME

Once you have chosen your legal structure and completed the various steps, you will still have to:

Take out professional insurance: it will cover all the risks related to the exercise of your hairdressing profession (burns, etc.);

Take out suitable automobile insurance, which will cover any damage that may occur while traveling to your customers.

HOW DO I PLAN MY FUTURE EXPENSES?

Your home hairdressing activity will generate two main types of expenses:

Those related to the products and materials you will need to get started and resell to your customers to increase your margins. Be careful to plan and manage the stock!

Those related to your travel costs: prefer a small area, at least when starting your hairdressing activity, to prevent your costs related to gasoline, consumables for your car, and potential tolls from flying away!
