Netflix: look how much money we spent on these actors. Toni collete is so amazing in this movie. I litterally shed tears while watching her, i thought her character is a poor mother with deteriorated memories. It's like a literal descent into mental illness, or mental ageing depending on how you view it i guess.

I wish you'd have marked where the satelite is in the cloverfield one, i still couldn't see anything. I still dont get it. This movie makes me feel bad about the people in my daydreams. THANK, GOD, SOMEONE DID A VIDEO. The editing in this film is brilliant, is almost like when you remember things in your head, not in real life. The insidious and conjuring movies are the masters of creepy things in the background.

I like the production of the review and you point of view. Keep going. This entire movie was extremely hard to watch.

Did anyone notice that random shot in the first car sequence where it seems like the camera is moving outside the car and the Young Woman turns as if she's noticing something fly past the car? I think about that shot a lot and why it was there. I seriously could not see the satellite. I paused it at different times, rewatched at least 15 times, went full screen and watched it that way like 5 times, and I'm on a lap top so screen size isnt a problem and I still cant see it. Would have loved a big red circle.

This scene you can spot something that is absolutely horrifying! You can't see it? Bummer. Number 5... That dinner scene was soo intense. better than horror movies. It's hilarious how he sings pack of lies. I had a stroke trying to read the title. I love Kaufman and a love your reviews so I was very excited to this video since I saw your Kaufman Marathon on Letterboxd. And man what a incredible video, probably my favorite. You... i got lost and confused watching this review totally save me from the confusion. Damn i already watched it. Super distracting having your face pop up. Takes me out of the video. I get 1408 vibes. I really dont think you understood the most crucial reason why the editing in the film is the way it is. Sure it helps to accentuate the unsettling tone, but the editing is mainly the way it is to mimic how the human mind is always thinking ahead and interrupting itself when thinking of a fantasy. The young woman and Jake arent 2 different “characters” as you say, but 2 different parts of the same mind. Jakes mind. Her thoughts are an extension of Jakes thoughts and when they talk to each other, its a combination of Jake imagining how this relationship in his head would play out, and him having debates and discussions with himself about topics like movies, plays, his views on life and time, etc. When they argue, its Jake arguing with himself and doubting his views on certain topics and moments in his life. Its a form of his own self criticism/self hatred. When you think of a topic in your mind, you dont think of each sentence from beginning to end individually, your mind is constantly interrupting and changing the thoughts that pop up within it. Its the reason the young womans clothes change color. Its the reason Jake is seemingly able to read her thoughts, because they are his own real world thoughts seeping into the fantasy that hes trying to suppress. Its the reason characters seem to teleport from place to place. Its the reason Jake seems to get distracted by things in the real world such as the swing set, or how the word “wow” is an all purpose exclamation. Jake is constantly changing details - whether big or small - about the fantasy. Like I mentioned before its why the characters clothes change, but its also why his parents change age, and why the band aid on his dads head is switching sides. Jake is forgetting little details and trying to find different places in time to place his fantasy.

In Carrie 2013 in the alternative ending theres a spilt second scene were Carrie is holding Sues baby. Don't forget about sound! the constant lack of coherence between the visual and aural frame is very upsetting. Kaufman is overrated. He drowned himself on narcissistic self pitty. With all due respect, that's my opinion. Another thing to consider are the costumes: dishevelled, thrown on (badly coordinated maybe? looking bulky and confining in the small space of the car. Would a redhead really wear a red and black woolly pullover like that, accentuating to her hair colour? The chubby guy seems wedged in that seat, wouldn't he have taken that coat off and hung it behind him? I reckon we subliminally pick up those clues, adding to our (i.e. the viewer's) unease or slight discomfort.
