旧田中家別邸(1) 庭園/ 鹿児島県霧島市

海運業で財を成した実業家・田中省三の別邸で、約1,320坪もの敷地に邸宅と庭園がある。庭園は池泉廻遊式で本来は桜島を借景とし、鹿児島市の島津氏別邸・仙巌園（磯庭園）を強く意識した設えだった。残念ながら現在では海側に戦後建てられた民間のビルに遮られ桜島は見えない。また庭は公共の公園のような整備がなされ日本庭園としての純粋性は著しく損なわれている。中島のイヌマキと蘇鉄が主木、その他、桜や紅葉などがバランスよく植えられている。池には近代庭園ならではの噴水がある一方で、蓬莱伝説に基づき仙人の洞穴を表現したアーチ状の石組みが浮かぶが、これは薩摩藩の庭園ではよく見かけるもの。池の背後の緩やかな築山に置かれた大きな山灯籠をメインの石造景物とし、それ以外に池の周囲に高さを押さえた小さな置灯籠などの石灯籠が幾つも配されており楽しい。その他、庭内回遊園路ぞい各所に珍しい大小５基の朝鮮石塔が据えられている。全国の庭で見られる高麗型のシンプルな朝鮮灯籠とは異なり、江戸時代作庭の薩摩藩を中心とする南九州の庭園でしばしば見られる朝鮮石塔は大変装飾的で塑像的な柔かさを感じさせる独特の石造彫刻。最も古くかつ印象深いのは鹿児島市の島津氏玉里別邸の池泉に浮かぶ朝鮮八角三重石塔であろう。それらが大正時代に作られた旧田中家の庭園に集められている理由は不明だが、おそらくは明治以降に消滅した薩摩藩内の武家屋敷などの複数の庭園から集められたものか、もしくは海運業を営んだ田中家が直接朝鮮で買い付け持ち帰ったたものかもしれない。いずれも正確なことは不明。私が知る限り、鹿児島以外のエリアで一般公開している朝鮮石塔がある庭は熊本県八代市の「松浜軒」、一般公開されていない個人宅の庭は福岡県に一庭のみ。

“Kyu Tanaka ke Bettei (1) garden” /Kirishima-city Kagoshima-pref

A villa that was completed in Taisho 11 in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was built by SyozoTanaka, who made a fortune in the shipping industry. He invited excellent carpenters from Kansai to Kagoshima to build this villa. The garden is a style "Chisen kaiyu Shiki Teien" where people walk around the pond for a walk. This is a garden originally borrowed the scenery of Sakurajima volcano. Currently, a house is set between the garden and Sakurajima, and the view has been cut off. The pond has a fountain, which is one of the features of a modern garden, but also has a stone composition that represents a cave based on the traditional Zen legend. This garden is currently western parked, but it is not original. Originally it is a pure Japanese garden.
