This film is an abject attempt to play with the expectations of the audience. However, Kaufman reveals his limitations as a director by failing to deliver any sort of resolution to his viewers. The film does an excellent job of stringing the audience along for a miserable 2 hours, with virtually no pay off. Kaufman clearly relied on his reputation to carry the abstract defunct narrative rather than taking a decisive directing role.
If you have not seen the film. Please save yourself the effort. There is very little to be gained from it except to serve as a roadmap for other filmmakers on film strategies to avoid.

This movie is so perfect in every way that it doesn't deserve to share the same streaming service as the kissing booth 2. Synecdoche New York was life changing for me. I was traveling the world and hadn't been to the cinema in 3 months. I arrived in Sydney and immediately grabbed a ticket. I loved Kaufman and couldn't wait to see what he would do when unleashed with no mediating director to censor his more wild impulses (like the original Adaptation script which had a Yeti in the climax. a friggin mythical creature. Long story short I left the theatre and went to see it again immediately. which I've done only one other time in my life (with Independence Day. judge me. I dare you. And the movie was profound and funny and painful and everything that I wanted it to be and more and at the end I cried and went back to see it again because I like to laugh and cry and feel existential dread on repeat and now I'll follow Kaufman off a cliff into oblivion because he's the writer I wish I could be. I also like I'm Thinking of Ending Things and your review is great.

We didnt notice and went to get snacks and when we came back and went to unpause it we saw her and I swear I nearly choked on my drink. Both of us were legitimately scared to unpause.

I wanted to love this, because I really liked the book, but this is awful. The book, while having its 'did I read that right' moments, flowed so well. This movie is just a jumbled mess of mass confusion that it just ends up being not surprising and just plain boring.
