［「何だって？」と聞き返す表現 ］
EP111の会話に着目してみましょう。
Akira : Oh, you poor thing. You must be so tired of getting all those bad leads.
➡：ああ、かわいそうに。うんざりしているでしょう。役に立たない情報ばっかりで。
Asuka : Come again?
➡：何だって？
この Come again? は「もう一度来て」という意味ではなく、相手の言ったことが聞き取れなった際に聞き直す表現です。この他に聞き返す表現には Pardon? ・Sorry?・ Excuse me?・What was that? もよく使われますが、Come again ? の方がカジュアルな響きになります。 Could you say that again please? 「すみません。もう一度言っていだだけますか？」と丁寧に言うこともできます。イントネーションを下げて言うと「また来てくださいね」となってしまうので要注意です。
