A Gakuso Framed Picture in the Main Building of a Temple

2015.09.16 04:35

In the recess of the main hall of a newly built temple outside of Kyoto, we created a piece that covers an entire wall with pure gold leaf. Since gold leaf is more delicate than torinoko and other types of washi paper, and reflected light will bring attention to any bumps, craters, or minute dust and dirt particles on the wall prior to application, we had to be extremely careful. Therefore we did not apply the gold leaf directly. Instead, we first put down an underlay of four sheets of washi paper to create the smooth finish seen here.
