It seems to be a favorite hobby for some Christian-minded thinkers with superficial world view to take on books and stories that are written from and only understandable from a specifically non-Christian and anti-psychiatric almost satanic frame of mind.
It's as if a Priest pretended to be interested and infatuated with the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and made a documentary of his philosophy attempting to manifest the nature of good and evil within the philosophy of a philosopher that is famous for tearing down the very idea of good and evil.
The main idea in the Hannibal books is supposed to center on the depth of their own human nature that the detectives are forced to face when they confront Hannibal. How justice itself revolves around the concept of murder just like being an adult involves the symbolical need to murder ones parents. (Symbolical murder of the idea of parents is needed for the idea of parents as actual separate people, other adults.) One cannot have a view on justice without a willingness for a symbolical murder of injustice.
Where in Clarice Starling do we see this soul of a murderer that is supposed to be depicted in this story? Nowhere. Because the story of "The Silence of the Lambs" is not included in this movie. If you want the story read the book or watch the older movie "manhunter" to catch a similar spirited story made as a movie. If you want to read the bible, read the bible instead of watching a bible-fied version of "The Silence of the Lambs.

"The silence of the lambs" is not just (or just not) a film about the FBI hunting a serial killer. The officer in charge of this hunt (Jack Crawford played by Scott Glenn) assumes that "it takes one to know one" and wants the help of a psychpath who is already behind bars (Dr Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins. Because Hannibal does not want to speak with any of his men, Grawford sents a female trainnee (Clarice Starling played by Jodie Foster. The relationship that evolves between Clarice and Hannibal is the real gem of this film.
Already their first meeting is brilliant. Clarice has te descent a couple of stairs and go through a couple of doors to reach the heavily guarded Lector. It reminds of a descent in the underworld, a metaphor that is used a couple of times in this film. When reaching Lecter, he is standing in the middle of his cell. Despite his normal appearance Hopkins manages to radiate evil in his most pure form.
The FBI is in a hurry because the serial killer can strike again every day. Hannibal Lector has all the time in the world, because he has been senenced to life imprisonment. There resuls a cat and mouse came in which Lecter aks personal information from Clarice (which she has been ordered not to give) in exchange for help (sounds familiar in the internet age. During the relationship there somehow grows some respect and trust. Clarice not only learns about the case but also about herself.
Clarice, who is of humble descent and who works very hard to climb the social ladder, is less confident then she wants us to believe. We see this for example in a scene where she enters an elevator full of men much taller then her. Dr Hannibal Lecter recognizes her uncentainty immediately and delves into her past. This gives rise to a couple of flashbacks where it takes some time for the viewer to realise that we are in the past and no longer in the present.
The flashbacks are one example of sophisticated editing, the parallel montage of the arresting scene is another. Parallel montage is nearly as old as the movies self. It was already used by D.W. Griffith in "Intolerance" 1916) in a sequence in which we alternately see the hanging of a man and the approaching of the one who knows that he is innocent. In this example of parallel montage we know at each moment at whom we are looking. The sophistication of the "Silence of the lamb" montage is that we no longer know which images belong to which location. Clarice and a police force are approaching two different houses. One of these houses is empty, at the other lives the serial killer. We see a police man ring the bell. The next thing we see is a bell ringing inside. Belong these images to the same location. br> "The silence of the lambs" depends for a good part on the acting of Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. In 1991 Jodie Foster was still young, but already very experienced (see played in "Taxi driver" 1976, Martin Scorsese) at the age of fourteen. At first I thought Anthony Hopkins was more convincing in "normal" roles such as in "Shadowlands" 1993, Richard Attenborough) and "The remains of the day" 1993, James Ivory. Only on second sight I could appreciate his ability to personalize evil without to much gruesome action.
The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal Lector has been labeled as a beauty and the beast relationship. This is only partly true. In the first place Hannibal Lecter has a normal appearance and is not particularly ugly (not good looking either. In the second place if the beast does something wrong it is because of his nature and outside the reach of his free will (compare "Frankenstein" 1931, James Whale. I don't know to which extend a psychopath has a free will. The only (but not unimportant) match" is that during the film we develop some sympathy for Hannibal (but we keep identifying only with Clarice.
