abstract 1963. With a few months left in his sentence, thirty-eight year old convict Randall Patrick McMurphy - "Mac" - serving time for several assaults and statutory rape, has just been transferred from a labor camp associated with Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton to a psychiatric hospital. Mac has been able to use acting "crazy" - having a belligerent and smart-alecky attitude and anti-authoritarian behavior - to his benefit in not having to do any work. He is at the hospital as the authorities at Pendleton want him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to prove he is not crazy, believing this is all an act to get out of work. He believes this stint will get him out of any more work while he serves out the remainder of his sentence. He is placed in a ward with a group of men who have differing degrees of lucidity and control of their mental faculties. He continues to behave in the same manner as always to get what he wants, using the other patients either as accessories or things for his own amusement. He adds to his list of goals to do anything to annoy the ward's tyrannical head nurse, Miss Mildred Ratched, whose seeming want is to break the spirit of any of the men in her care. In his battle with Nurse Ratched, Mac eventually tries to help the men get a voice of their own while in the hospital, and for some for their eventual return to the outside world

The overall message the film seems to portray is one of humanity and what makes somebody themselves. As well as this the is a theme of cycles and routine. There are scenes in which characters are overly joyed when they break consistency and routine such as when they are pretend to watch television and the "Christmas Party.
The film touches on aspects of relationships and sex in particular with Billy, a man who has not been with a women and seems to be scared of authoritative women such as Nurse Ratched and his mother; after sleeping with Candy he and being caught he is scared of what his mother might do when she finds out and then ends up committing suicide (thus showing Billy never truly being free even after sleeping with a women)
As well as this, the protagonist Randle McMurphy (Mac) is a man who likes to bet a lot as well as eager to make relationships with people, many times for his own benefit. Many times he is attempted to be subdued by various methods to make him less "dangerous" with only the final attempt working with the removal of part of his brain. His death at the end is somewhat of a mercy killing by The Chief; this was perhaps done in order to preserve the memory of Mac and the 'run to freedom' at the end of the film is the fulfilment of Mac's wishes in order to be free and break the constant cycle; Mac is also able to do by breaking the bonds that shackle him to the Earth and to be free in death.

Hands down one of Jack Nicholson's best films. A masterpiece that really stands out among other films. This incredible story about a man who is placed in a mental institution and becomes friends with almost every patient. Nicholson really does his best to help the mental patients deal with making their time better and overcoming the evil nurse ratchet. A question that most viewers might ask is why is Nicholson in there in the first place? Nurse Ratchet really does a great job a being a horrible human being and she gives the audience a reason to keep routing for the patients in their struggle. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is simply spectacular and its a must watch film.
