The 50/1.4 has a weird and somewhat fragile AF system. They put full time manual focus on a micro-USM motor (not the usual ring-USM moter). Check to see if your Canon 50mm 1.4 USM Is An Affected Unit.This kind of problems occur because of dust particles accumulating in the focus ring of the lens and eventually jamming it. As other experts have suggested, I recently got an EF 50mm 1.8 lens for my EOS 60D. The automatic focus appears to be fine but turning the focus ring while in manual does not
